What musicians started late? Ian Curtis died at my age, made me wonder if it's possible to "make it" but not in an economical way, in a fulfilling your own desires.Music is very dependant on age and musical maturity (skills both for composing and interpretation)Only example I could think of is Dan Barret but that's just because it took him 8 years to finish Deathconsciousness
>>129809323Not many. If anything music is a young man's game while filmmaking is a middle-aged man's game
>>129809323James Murphy is like, THE example of this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYCz06bS380&t=175s him explaining it
Sting was 26 when the Police formed and the guitar player Andy Summers was 9 years older than him.
>>129809323mark sandman started morphine when he was 36 years old
The singer for Rammstein was 31 when they formed.
>>129809532lcd is shit
stop looking for excuses and just make music
>>129809669i never understood them. I was a big indie dork right when they were poppin off and didn't care for it, then somehow they weaseled their way into the american hippy festival scene and I saw them headline a fest on a headful of acid and I still didn't get why people liked it so much
>>129809523sounds about right. Is there any game for the old man or is it over them?
>>129809323Bruckner started seriously composing late, at like 40. It's totally possible to make great works at an old age, don't listen to anyone who says otherwise. The thing is that most professional musicians are going to start young just because they'll be interested, and because if you're not a professional musician you won't have much time to hone your craft. But even so, Ives was a white collar professional.
>>129809523https://youtu.be/awLkK-9lTBgWritten at 80 years old. OP don't listen to these people.
>>12980932323 is not "late" to start making music lmfao what the fuck are you talking aboutyou probably just think that because pop music churns through new fake teenagers every year
>>129809323WHEN WILL IT EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENDWHEN WILL IT END
>>129809323>in a fulfilling your own desiresdepends on what your desires are.most wannabe musicians are extremely delusional. thankfully, with the internet, you can settle for a low bar of famous. aim for 5k spotify listeners or smth
>>129809523Kubrick made Paths of Glory at 28
Jet Black started The Stranglers when he was 36 and didn't have a charting hit until 39. The band's biggest hit was at age 44.
Leonard Cohen was like 35System of a Down were hitting their 30s
>>129809323>made me wonder if it's possible to "make it"Depends on a lot of factors.Do you know how to suck cock? Can you bottom?Any objections to circumcised ones?
>>129809669I liked them in the mid-late 2000's. Have to say their music hasn't aged well at all and 'All my friends' is the single most overrated track in history.
>>129809323Howlin' Wolf learned to play guitar in his 40s
>>129810571I don't want 5k listeners. I want to quit my stupid job that I hate.
>>129811345i heard making a living frmom music sucks
>>129811363Then I'll sell shitty graphic t-shirts.
>>129809532people always mention Murphy but it's not like he was entirely absent from music, throughout his 20s he was a prominent DJ and behind the scenes guy, engineered recordings from bands like Six Finger Satellite, Les Savy Fav, June of 44

>>129809323The age thing is mainly related to time investment. When you're 15 years old you can spend most of your day fine tuning your musical skills without a care in the world, making shitty songs in the process and soldiering on. By your mid to late 20s you more than likely have a few responsibilities to take care of and therefore might only have a couple of hours of practice left in you on most days, and how much concentration you can muster up with that task is another issue on top of that. That's not even counting the hell of waiting for your bandmates to adjust their busy schedules if you're not doing this solo. You're also more likely to get looked down upon if you're making and releasing rudimentary sounding music befitting your limited skills at that age, and the criticism you might receive might come from a less passionate and jaded perspective audience than hearing what your fellow high schoolers thought of your stuff. So all in all it's a pragmatic game. Nothing is stopping you from giving this a shot however. You really will not know if you've got a musical bone in your body until you actually pick this shit up and try.
>>129809323Frankie Laine didn't start until his 30s. He often said he wished he'd started a decade earlier though.
>>129809323Starting from zero?NobodyPlayed for years then got going in their 30s?Plenty
>>129809323I still maintain that Willie Nelson has had the most enviable career of an American in popular music over the past six or seven decades. He's had a loyal audience for all that time. And while it's true, he had a career in music (mostly as a songwriter) since his early 20's, he never really became a star performer until he was in his 40's.
>>129812725well because famous country guys are meant to be old and grey
>>129809323Probably a minority, but that should just be motivation to try and prove that it can be done. Never listen to the ones telling you that you're too old, life is too short
>>129812725Merle Haggard, George Jones, Loretta Lynn also took a while to get big.
Obviously it helps to be into art in some aspect or another from an early age, for example someone who likes to draw as a child will develop skills into early adulthood and have a better grasp on the basics. However, you don’t really “develop” your sense of aesthetics until your early 20s regardless. Your hand to eye coordination in general is gimped until you reach adulthood. It’s just learning the basics that take at least a few years of consistent practice to really be able to develop your own “style”. Which someone who has been doing art since childhood would most likely already know and understand, thus being able to “bend” the rules and dynamics of art theories into their favor. You can still start in your mid to late 20’s but you have to be prepared to spend 10 years really honing in your skills to craft anything that might get praise or attention. Just my thoughts.
>>129811363it sure would suck for a tunnel rat>>129811397you mean like making your own? you could get way more bank just being a reseller
