Why is Peter Gabriel's stuff always amazing until the second or third listen? I've never seen an artist whose material is so good yet has such short staying power.

He's very much a product of his time and his sanctimonious fetishism for "the other" seeps into a lot of his lyrics and musical choices, which were typical of this early 80s - early 90s "afro-celtic" sound which now comes off as trite cliché.
