interesting how they never made anything else like west end girls, which is obviously their biggest song. i enjoy all the albums of theirs that i've heard, but nothing else has the same eerie vibe, or is even the same genre really, as it's not much of a synthpop song. i could see how someone who likes that song wouldn't like anything else by them.

A lot of people rag on his voice, but I think it's great. Then again I've always enjoyed androgynous vocals in music. Distinctive voices in general are just so much more soulful.
But yeah I have to admit, no one's ever sounded so simultaneously mega-gay and mega-British, it's pretty funny.

Pet Shop Boys is gay but also British and mega-popular with normies and they're kind of ambiguous about that over there, so it doesn't necessarily make you gay, no.

depends... depends on when you hear these songs/groups. if you are really young you dont get the meaning of the songs or understand gay. i heard smalltown boy as a little kid and didnt even know a dude was singing it i thought it was a girl singer. obviously bronski beat are mega-gay since two members died from AIDS

Well they were all gay yeah but I think Bronski Beat really came out of the gay subculture more? And then a few of their songs leaped into the mainstream in the 1980s. Felt that the gay side was more incidental to the Pet Shop Boys. Jimmy Somerville is a household name for older gay guys. Also HIV/AIDS activism.
>>
>>129826903
>Bronski Beat really came out of the gay subculture more?
never bothered to investigate it. liking them is embarrassing enough not going to think about it that much. but its easy to see why the boomers hated 80s music so much since most of it was so gay. i actually found all their cds at goodwill over the years

I hated that Go West song for so long that it put me off giving their other stuff a chance (which I regret). Was prob their most popular song when I was a kid. I was relieved when I found out it was just a cover and their own stuff doesn't really sound like that. I have softened to it over the years - don't hate it anymore - but still don't exactly like it

Sometimes you're better off dead
There's a gun in your hand and it's pointing at your head
You think you're mad, too unstable
Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables
In a restaurant in a West End town
Call the police, there's a mad man around
Running down underground to a dive bar

In a West End town

Why does "old" synthpop sound so much better than contemporary synthpop? The only new synthpop-adjacent stuff that compares to the 80s shit is goth revival stuff (Drab Majesty, Molchat Doma, Trust, etc), but that's only because they're aping older styles beat for beat. Modern instrumental tech just doesn't have the same feel or whatever.

I guess what I mean is there's an organic feel that older synthpop has that's missing from newer stuff, whether it went in a colder minimal synth direction or a warmer pop direction. Maybe the diff between analogue and digital, I dunno
