Whats the reason for some 90s indie rock groups don't try harder and get focussed, its like they play it in a slack way too cool for school way (eg pavement). also they're faceless i mean, t's like they have to compensate it with quirky antics too cool for school shit jokey slackers persona (eg pavement)

You're applying today's culture's standards to bands from a time when, to date, they were the most modern, cutting edge thing to have happened yet, the glut of pop culture to come in the 2010s etc. & in particular artists having very tightly-focused and image-heavy, corporate-advertising-inspired 'brands' (to the intense extent we have that today) hadn't happened yet. Plenty of indie rock bands weren't chasing an image, they were some friends jamming together and getting famous organically without any intentional branding or power play. You zoomers seem to struggle to understand basic temporality and judge e.g. Shakespeare or Napoleon as if they should have known what's happening today and take that into account in their judgements. You're so dumb and so unable to get a handle on reality it's bizarre.

I think op might probably not like this pavement band

Playing sloppily can have its own appeal for some. Pavement is a band that clearly does it on purpose, but some bands are sloppy because they're just not that tight no matter how hard they try and people like them anyways (Black Sabbath and Metallica come to mind). Anyways 90s indie rock, besides the slacker scene, was actually super tight for the most part.

there were rock acts before that period with actual guts, focus and uncompromising/independent way of thinking like bo diddley, lou reed or beefheart to name a few. and i'm not a zoomer.

>try harder and get focussed,

because that was the least cool thing you could do

the reason pavement in particular come across as too cool for school or unambitious is because malkmus either didn't want or most likely feared big success and was a serial self-saboteur. he was also a big pothead which probably contributed to anxiety and comes across on stage and in interviews (see https://youtu.be/t92FpC-7Zt0?si=SBr4N5fNS6J7Lmsz) as very insecure. the fact that he was talented and physically ticked many 'chad' boxes but still behaved this way anyway lends credence to the idea that he is basically kind of a wacko. pavement made appearances on the tonight show and conan o'brien back in the day, they had chances for big success, but malkmus in particular spoils them all by inexplicably acting so petulant and weird that the performances are extremely uncomfortable to watch. in a way he actually was cool for sticking to his guns, being himself, being punk or alt or whatever. you'd be forgiven for thinking he was cool. he's a genuine talent. but a bad role model who refused to play the game less because of punk values and more for mental, unhealthy reasons.

sounds like a lame excuse to hide that you aren't very good

you're overrating him. he lacked talent, focus and independent tthinking at the end to put actually great music. one of the casualties of the so called alt culture

They knew they were the last generation in the US that could squeak out a nice life for themselves while not trying.

I know what you mean and I think that it's part of a broader deconstruction and dilution of rock music. To make a mockery of something that was once serious, well to them, that the closest to an A bomb they can get. So yeah Dinosaur Jr. Makes stupid ass video for Freak Scene that is cringe. That's the point. You took that song seriously, now they are fucking with you over it. It's all mind control. Fuck them, 60's was the best and will outlive them.
