I just got done listening to 'Oil of Every Pearl's Unsides' and it was somewhat of a pain.It's like all the annoying parts of dancey pop highlighted and turned to 11. Compositionally, it seems to be going for nothing except going in random directions for a shocking effect. I can see how this can be appealing to a youth movement (transgenders and other LGBTs!) for rebellious or identitarian purposes or something, and I guess it's novel. But then again it's also not because it's just taking elements and highlighting them more extremely for dramatic effect. It defeats the point of dance music along the way because there's no sufficiently groovy moments. 100gecs are the best hyperpop act because they're pretty much the only ones to actually write pop songs with a coherent composition as the foundation, and then making it "hyper" with weird vocal effects, weird synths, sound effects, noise and whatnot.
