you're dealing with an overrated artist. the industry uses the same techniques cults use on the vulnerable and feeble minded.
>>
>>129838240
>your only option is agreeing with my stupid shit
I think you might just be retarded
>>
>>129837729
He is overrated in general but Purple Rain is a great album
>>
>>129837729
He's underrated if anything. Everyone raves about his 80s albums and ignores the 90s stuff when it's just as good. Some great stuff in the 2000s too. Also, he continues to be massively influential to this day.
>>
>>129838541

Prince is the ultimate filter
>>

>>

Dirty mind is the best
>>
>>129837729
Prince is by far the most overrated of them all.
He made terrible music all around.
>>
>>129839589
>He made terrible music all around.
he really did. nobody ever even talks about his 4 albums prior to 1999. just like nobody talks about any of his albums after sign O the times. from 1990 until he croaked he released unlistenable trash. he was a one album, purple rain obviously, wonder
>>
>>129837729
Apparently he was really big in the 80s

God knows why I guess everyone was on coke
>>
>>129839655
if we're being honest dirty mind, 1999, and purple rain are all great. his self titled and controversy are very good. around the world in a day has some filler imo but its worth checking out. parade is supposedly pretty good but i couldn't get into it and i can't really speak on the rest of his discography
>>
>>129839758
>if we're being honest dirty mind, 1999, and purple rain are all great
i just cant agree. everything before purple rain is totally forgettable to me. only the first three songs on 1999 are any good. prince was only good with the revolution. without them i dont like any of his music and i have tried to listen to it all. but his music in the 90s is just so bad
>>
Raspberry Beret is one of the greatest pop songs of all time. I don't even care about the rest of his discography. This one song alone makes him one of the GOATs
>>
>>129837729
Yeah. Most of his shit is complete trash. Every song has the same boring sterile drum beat throughout with some blipblop synthline and the worst thin production known to man.
>>129840076
You wouldn't know a good pop song if it fucked you in the ass.
>>
>>129840114
That's why most 80's pop in general sucks
>>
>>129840114
>>129840168
agreed, even his good stuff is almost ruined by the drums
>>
>>129840168
Most 80s pop are much more exciting than Prince, have better and fuller production values, more inventive chord progressions and catchier melodies.

Raspberry Beret sounds like a Eurythmics deep cut.
>>
>>129840239
>most 80s pop has more inventive chord progressions
really?

I like Little Red Corvette
He has some good songs

wow you sure convinced me with those hot opinions fagtron
>>
Of course you faggots only like Purple Rain, this board can't into proper funk.
>>
>>129837729
I have a similar relationship with his music as Whitney Houston’s. I’ll hear some songs and think “my God, they’re a genius. Incredible.” Then I’ll try and listen to a whole record and I can’t do it, I simply cannot maintain the same interest.
>>
>>129837729
Completely wrong on all accounts and people will one day realize how great he was. He fell off after he battled the record companies and changed his name to a symbol and his newborn son died and he became a Jehovah's Witness with Drake's Uncle. But from '78 to '90 there was no other artist like him amazing. Even his later output with Emancipation and 3121 are great. I will admit his guitar playing is massively overrated, it's just Jimi Hendrix wah-wah slop with a tone that sounds like a jar of bees. His showboating While My Guitar Gently Weeps isn't impressive, it's shameful. But other than that if you dislike Prince you dislike music.
>>
>>129843419
Based. I don't know why this samefagging schizo has such a hateboner for Prince.
>>
>>129843253
No serious person rates garbage like that in the first place. It's music for fat emo girls, not even part of the conversation.
>>
>>129843329
this, /mu/ is full of sexless whitoids who can only enjoy shit like Swans
>>
>>129837729
Agreed. Purple Rain is good but no that good, and his other albums are mediocre.
>>
>>129843329
Prince makes terrible funk. Of all the funk in the world, why listen to Prince's iteration?
Why not listen to actual funk, instead of some faggot playing over a drum machine?
>>
>>129843419
i don't think it's a samefagging schizo so much as just a bunch of tourist retards who've tried and failed to get through the entry-level /mu/core and now want to make it everyone else's problem that they got filtered. but that's just par for the course for this board nowadays, sadly.

Funk gets old. What made Prince good was not being bound to one label
>>129843354
No album i can say is no skip, but my most listened to is SOTT
>>129843419
He needed a good editor because he made and released so much. What ruined him was the horrific rap era - his music was too good for that rubbish
>>
>>129843906
The rap on Face Down was awesome but yeah I agree. I think the real problem was, as I mentioned earlier, becoming a secluded weirdo. In the 80s he was behind the ball so to speak being forward thinking like MJ or George Michael. Then all of the sudden he's hiding in Paisley Park doing interviews by proxy through whispering to his girlfriend and releasing albums through his website (unheard of at the time) and promoting nigger conspiracies. It's as if a global superstar did everything in his power to become yesterday's news.
>>
>>129844011
every good artist needs his tard wrangler, especially if they're schizo savants like p. when it's all yes men shit immediately falls apart
>>
>>129843419
I will never enjoy his no-bassline chungusfunk and I will never fall for the 'but he's actually really sophisticated' meme either
>>
>>129844011
Need AI to delete all the shitty rap off the songs he made because he was still making gems (eg Sun Moon Stars and Muse To The Pharoah). Totally true about Paisley Park too that became his walled garden and he wasn't keeping up with the music scene enough

SOTT is hitting, good call
>>
>>129837729
Pop music in general is overrated. Growing up on rap and rnb slop, Prince was like Mozart to my ears. After getting into music streaming, I quickly realized how underwhelming most of his albums really were. He's still pretty good, but honestly nothing to rave about, especially in comparison to great composers.
>>
>>129839655
>nobody ever even talks about his 4 albums prior to 1999. just like nobody talks about any of his albums after sign O the times
That still leaves Prince with Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade, and SOTT. 4 indisputably solid albums. Most artists are lucky to have two classic albums. But shovelware is what you'd expect from a man who makes music for therapeutic reasons.

>That still leaves Prince with Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade, and SOTT. 4 indisputably solid albums.
yes, they are OK but many people try to claim prince as one of the greatest ever and honestly if those 4 albums represent his masterwork, then he falls very short in terms of talent
>>
>>129837729
Prince fucking sucks. I turn off that gay nigger screeching every time.
>>
>>129844335
OP's bait worked we're discussing the merits of Prince
>>129844251
Sort of similar for me but i still rate him highly. I do think he got stuck in a pop composition rut when really he probably wanted to branch out but couldn't
>>129844168
Yeh SOTT encapsulates all the best of Prince
>>
>>129843906
>>129844168
>>129846674
I couldn't get into Sign of the Times. I feel like the people who rate it higher than Purple Rain are trying too hard.
>>
>>129838541
whats his best 90s album, i dropoff at 88
>>
>>129839589
Darling Nikki, 1999, and No are great songs from solid albums
>>
>>129847363
My no skips on PR are
>when doves cty
>i would die for you
>purple rain
>beautiful ones
If PR ditched Take Me With U, Comp Blue and Darling Nikki for Erotic City, We Can Fuck and maybe one of his unreleased bootlegs then i'd rate it higher

My SOTT no skips
>sott
>housequake
>ballad of dororhy parker (fav all time prince track)
>slow love
>forever in my.life (those vocal layers)
>if i was your gf
>strange relationship
>icnttpoym
>the cross
>adore

And that doesn't even include the songs that were cut from the triple album SOTT was meant to be. So that's why i rate it higher
>>
>>129843329
Parliament is the best funk band easily
>>
>>129847535
darlng nikki is legit top 3 alongsid PR and beautiful ones
>>
>>129847535
I’m retarded or something (many such cases) because Take Me With U is probably one of my favorite Prince songs
>>
>>129847564
Not for me but even if you include it SOTT just has way more esp if you listen to all the unreleased (now released) stuff for that album (Crystal Ball/Dream Factory/Camille)
>>
>>129837729
I legitimately despise The Velvet Underground. Have never liked that murky opioid sound
>>
>>129847671
It's cool we can all like different songs. For me it just plods along and pretty forgettable when compared to Doves, IWD4U. I feel like it might be more of a Wendy & Lisa written song
>>
>>129840076
This. All the studio laboratory work the last few decades still can't produce a pop song that good.
>>
>>129837729
Blondie has always seemed just straight up terrible to me.
Charli XCX too but maybe most of /mu/ agrees she sucks.
>>
>>129847780
Elaborate
>>
>>129847564
Actually on relistening to DN the track rocks i guess i just don't like the intro until the guitar kicks in
>>129847771
Love the title track of ATWIAD it shouldn't work but it does
>>
>>129847780
Heart of Glass is such a vibe though
>>
>>129847795
Blondie? Can't sing worth shit. Nothing interesting whatsoever instrumentally.
Charli is just bad hoe pop.
>>
>>129847837
I can't stand it. SHitty coke disco club music with complete amateur singing.

David Bowie was mid. I'm sorry
>>
>>129848159
He made a lot of good music but it's hard to take him seriously as an overall artist if there was no consistency to the type of music he put out or the type of personas that he expressed
I don't have a really good feel of who David Bowie was, so to speak
>>
>>129848216
>>129838557
Correct. As I said in here, if you don't know who or what you're supposed to be you'll always kind of be a meme.
>>
>>129848159
Ziggy Stardust was pretty good but overall nothing he did really impressed me. Even his "Berlin period" was kind of him riding on Brian Eno.
>>
>>129837729
bob dylan... just fucking awful. i dont even mind folk or 70s singer-songwriter style music but his voice is the worst
>>
millennials mostly hate prince because his albums were unavailable to pirate, you couldn’t even watch his music videos until he died
>>
>>129849032
The reason Prince didn't want anyone watching his music videos is for the same reason he didn't want people sampling his music, it's because he felt like the labels would get all the money for other people's work, not just his own work but other musicians that worked with him and his producers. He felt like the labels were too greedy and didn't want to give them the satisfaction even if it meant he'd also lose out.
>>
i have a mixed feeling about Prince, at least his dedication to music is second to none although it means a barrage of truly awful albums past '95 where he thought he could master other genres.
>>
Initially Prince always came off life a pretentious, self serious douche. Basically a 2020’s art hoe born in the body of a short racially ambiguous male boomer. But I started to appreciate the perspective it the more I got into music. Now he’s a slightly less pretentious self serious art hoe, but with a point and some good songs.
>>
Rick James denounced him for going too far and having too explicit songs.
>>
>>129849109
dddid yyyyou say Rick James? the same Rick James who tortured women in non-consensual BDSM sessions while high out of his mind on drugs? nobody should listen to him, nobody!
>>
Prince was just Lil Nas X for boomers
>>
>>129837729
I don't like The Police at all. Roxanne is trash to me.
>>
>>129843253
ur so real for this, used to be my fave band couple years shy of a decade ago, relistened to them earlier this month and it just…. honestly was not /that/ good …
>>
>>129849146
That's the goddamn joke, sperg

Also, wtf is even going on with the captcha anymore? I just got asked to name some moeblob.
>>
>>129848159
Not even mid imo. Just not for me
>>129849079
Tbf Sony were very supportive of Prince's career. Not many teens would be left to completely make and produce their first albums and they didn't dump him after only modest initial success. But the business practice of owning artists' masters is fucked up. Should be 50% absolute maximum
>>
>>129837729
Purple Rain is not even the best album of 1984 like /mu/cels claim, I can name at least 50 albums from the same year that are better.
>>
>>129837729
My, what terrible taste you have!
>>
>>129850294
