Sup /mu/tants. I have been building a collection of CDs over the last year and after that one vinyl thread we had I’d like to start one for CDs. Here’s part 1 and 2 of my collection
>>129838350
Don't end up like me, kids
>>129838396Holy basado
>>129838350Based as fuck collection. There's a lot of stuff here I would steal. Working on my Deftones collection after finding White Pony and Around the Fur at Walmart. Most of my collection is emo/post-hardcore. I have about 400ishvof em. It's a problem but I've collected these for most of my life.
>>129838396Jealous anon. Damn. That's a great setup.
I found this album + Franz Ferdinand used yesterday
>>129838396great stuff, I'm slowly building up my cd collection
Bump. A CD general would be cool on here
Some kid drove his car into my local record store
I posted in the other thread too. Here is a larger cutout of my collection. 95% is still thrifted, but especially the top left section has some things I actually bought new.I hope this image is still legible; I had to turn the jpeg quality down pretty low to make the file size limit.
>>129844159I went to a place in Ohio once called the Exchange. Pretty cool selection but some prices on stuff was crazy>>129844651Amazing collection anon
>>129838350i like this type of thread where people show off their collections. but not many of these cds seem very rare or collectible>>129838396do you have any rare cds in your collection?
>>129845518A lot of common stuff is becoming rare since CDs are gaining traction again
>>129845518>do you have any rare cds in your collection?A few that might be worth like 40 bucks, I'll check at home
>>129845572i believe that pic has been posted before and its been mentioned many of those box sets are bear family releases. or am i imagining that?also by rare i mean first pressings... like this
>>129844651holy moses so much kino
>>129838350I'm primarily a vinylfag, but I see so many great jazz CDs at thrift stores and estate sales I can't pass them up. Every CD in this pic is from sales and stores in my neighborhood, I've never bought one online or paid more than $3
>>129845629They're Bear Family boxes, kind of expensive but not exactly rare (though a copy of one seven-disc set I own did sell on Discogs for $1000 because it's out of print)I've never cared about early pressings of CDs, I'd rather have the version with the most bonus tracks
>>129844651>fairport convention>melt banana>LRD>boredoms>god is my co-pilot>spiritualized>souxsie>joy division>orb>fishmans>philip glass>angelo badalamenti>boards of canada>basinski>J5>autechre>UGK>gang starr>kate bush>boris>om>morbid angel>sleep>3-6 mafiaholy fucking kino
>>129845747I have a Circle Takes the Square album. Sorta rare. Lower Definition album too and you literally can't find physical copies of it online.
>>129845811nta but I have spiritualized collections volume 1 and 2
>>129844651Image is perfect, a lot of stuff in there I have as well and also ended up getting through charity shops/second hand stores.
Bump
>>129845747>They're Bear Family boxeswhat they they... jazz or country? bear family seem to do only two genres. i have only country from that label. favorites are the david allan coe 2-on-one cds. none of these albums were ever released on cd in the usa
>>129848940>bear family seem to do only two genres. Most of their releases are either country or early rock 'n' roll, they don't do a lot of jazz -- You may be thinking of Mosaic Records, who put out comparable box sets for jazz
>>129844159Oh anon, I go there too. I was there last week.
How much do you guys normally pay on CDs?
>>129849096Typically I would say anywhere from $0.50-$10 is the range where I buy most. Anything outside of that is either a new CD or a harder to find CD.
>>129849096Second hand ones, $0.7 - $1.5
>>129849096Too fucking much, I mainly buy obscure releases you can only find online and they're $10 minimum plus international shipping most of the time
>>129849096For used CDs at a local record store usually $6-8. I can’t find much of interest at thrift stores so record shops with discogs prices are my only choice.
>>129849076In SATX?
>>129849096$20ish if I'm ordering from a band or label. Most at thrift stores here at a buck or two.
>>1298490963 for £1 is typical price from UK thrift stores. Lowest I've seen is 10 for £1. And sometimes I'll buy CDs on Ebay for up to £4 each.
I found a copy of Geese - Getting Killed at a Barnes and Nobles at 25% off.
>>129849096The low prices from before 2025 are over. Now used CDs go for $10+, even if they’re not rare. Tried multiple local shops as well as Discogs. Problem is, there’s no sales volume either, so this is just going to kill the format even further.
>>129838350>>129838353>>129844651Wow a bunch of boring rock bands. Who cares
Shoutout to Vitalogy for being the coolest cd in my collection
>>129852803>t. jealous streamfag
>>129852803Sounds like your broke ass is mad you have nothing of note in your own collection
My dad has a collection of around 300-400 CD's, mostly jazz but theres also rock. He also has some vinyls. But unfortunately, the collection is at our other house( grandfather's old house) so i cant take a picture. Though hopefully ill go there this summer so i'll take a picture and post it here
>>129852880>>129853845thanks for the (You)s. it's that easy folx
>>129848969right not long after posting that i wondered what i was thinking. i meant blues not jazz anyway. most of that stuff isnt really what im into. like the conway twitty box they put out. its him doing early rock n roll like elvis. no thanks i like his country stuff from the 70 onward though, i wish that label would do artists i like since the sets are so thorough
>>129854431>folxJump off a bridge, faggot
>>129854663knew i'd get one last one with that kek
>>129854693Bridge. Jump. Now. Faggot.
1997 birth here, I have my own collection but my dad's friends keep giving away CDs and he always sends them my way. Find some stuff I like sometimes. This binder must be from at most 2005 because the latest album I found there was Nine Inch Nails' "With Teeth" which it doesn't even look like an official copy of. There's also a Myspace link written on one of the CDs in sharpie. There is also a TON of Aerosmith in this binder. Even funnier, it has a series of some self-help looking bullshit CDs called "the power is within you" by Louise L. Hay, nutrition guides, something called "sacred earth drums", and guides on how to meditate. Feel kind of like dick posting this and judging the original owner but I never met him
>>129854803Forgot pic, whoops
>>129849096depends on what you want. there are no set prices since you find different prices across different platforms. heavy metal cds and rap are the most expensive and are the only ones that hold any value. excluding stuff issued by specialty labels like MOFI etc. most everything else can be found for much less than $10
>>129838350finding nothing but garbage in second hand stores this past year, used to find good shit occasionally, but recently it's the usual norah jones cd or whatever shit
>>129854818>Top left mystery disc
>>129854921>finding nothing but garbage in second hand stores this past yearsame. only worthwhile thing i can find at a thrift/goodwill sometimes is a greatest hits cd. dozens of harry connick cds though
>>129854981Yeah, I never really played many of these. I probably should play that one because the question marks intrigue me. If this thread is still up by that time, I'll let everyone know
>>129854723thanks for that one too! hell, give me one more kiddo. i know you want to
>>129838350>Opiate, ToolThis forgives all your other choices.>>129838396Great shelving. I gotta do that.>>129843113It's mostly meme interest. The occasional thread like this works.>>129844758This place was called The Record Exchange back when I went there. Bought great stuff there.>>129852734This. We just passed that golden era (2000-2020) where there were enough ppl offloading physical media that oversaturation mandated lower used prices. But that supply has now dried up. The only places to even get new media is online so it will quickly disappear altogether. Buy it while you can!
OH WELL...
>>129855230And that is about half of it.
>>129855230Any way...some music:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhZOPcH8wTs
>>129854818>>129854981Well it seems to just be a mix of 16 tracks. Most of them seem to be about getting high. I imagine this guy was a stoner then. I shazam'd most of themI'll list them:1. AEROSMITH - Janie's Got A Gun2. RAKIM - Concrete Jungle3. CYPRESS HILL - Hits From A Bong4. BOB DYLAN - Hurricane5. BONE THUGS-N-HARMONY - If I Could Teach the World6. BUSH - Glycerine7. KANSAS - Dust in the Wind (some remix)8. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - Born to Run9. BUBBA SPARXXX - Deliverance10. AEROSMITH - Sweet Emotion11. BRYAN ADAMS - Summer Of '6912. BON JOVI - Dead or Alive13. THE BEATLES - Ticket to Ride14. THE BEATLES - Strawberry Fields Forever15. BILLY JOEL - Uptowm Girl16. BOB DYLAN - Like a Rolling Stone
>>129855261
>>129855230Can't read the labels but good amount of classical there.
I picked this up a long time ago for a small fortune since it never got reissued, then last year it finally got reissued on Bandcamp for about $10. Pissed me off. But it's remastered and has some birckwalling shit so the CD is still better.
>>129855274Indeed. Upper board Opera and Classical.
>>129855207>It's mostly meme interestI dunno anon. CDs seem like they're back.
>>129855383I'll believe that when I see brick & mortar stores selling new physical media stock.
>>129855426You haven't seen that? They're everywhere.
>>129855446Lol, ok.
>>129855575The BestBuys and Targets here in Albuquerque have plenty of new CDs, so yeah. Also a decent selection of DVD and BluRay in spite of streaming (I picked up South Park S1-5 on BluRay for pretty cheap).
>>129855605Albq must then be behind the curve, then. Ohio BBs got rid of CDs years ago. Unless I'm wrong and YOUR BB actually brought them BACK. Is your selection any good or is it just tame slop?
>>129845518I don't think I have anything truly rare, but I have a few that I sought out on ebay or discogs for the master or just imported from japan. Recently>japan joy division unknown pleasure>canadian joy division closer>japan helen merrill>electra kill em allNone of them are valueable but not something i would find locally
>>129845677>so many jazz CDs at thrift shopsNot in my city unfortunately>check jazz section>michael boton>frank sinatra>kenny g
>>129845747>I've never cared about early pressings of CDs, I'd rather have the version with the most bonus tracksI'm sort of the opposite. I don't like these remasters with extra tracks, I just want the original album and ideally sounding the way it did when it was released unless there was a problem. I wont pay crazy prices for rare forat pressings though, i just look for og or close to og master.
>>129852734It's over. Been watching prices go up in real time. Glad i mostly restored my teenage collection when i did
>>129857891>japan joy division unknown pleasurejoy division/new order cds hold their value and i rarely see them in thrifts. only 90s era new order stuff at goodwill. i see this one constantly
>>129845677nice collection and lucky to live in a civilized place where jazz cds can be easily be found everywhere
>>129838396Holy boomer
>>129838350Cool alt dude
>>129838353I hope you're a girl
>>129844159Heard he bought the beatles discography and it was im stereo.
>>129858442What if I told you I'm 33
>>129844651Many gemsMany bullshit
>>129855426Walmart, anon. Jesus. Where the fuck have you been?
>>129858105You should get it. Regret is worth it alone.>>129855658Good thing we don't live and die about what the fuck they do in Ohio, huh?
I've been collecting since the early 90s, never stopped. I buy used, I thrift, I buy new.The vast majority is extreme Metal, but there's also lots of Noise, Power Electronics, Ambient, as well as lots of Jazz.
>>129858801Lol, no. There's not exactly a selection at walmart. Just pop-40 slop.
>>129859088Cool. Some of my 90s teenage years cds survived until now, but I think I pawned most of them for cigarette money in the early 2000s. I have mostly restored them and grown my collection.>>129858105At this point I think everything I bought used will hold its value.
>>129859338You didn't say anything about quality. You said you'd believe it when brick and mortar stores were selling cds. They are.
>>129859088Setup is sick
>>129860851Thanks, here's some random closeups
Box sets/unusual formats
Just a part of my collection
>>129860981Good stuff in there, really like the Relapse stuff
>>129861025Here is some more. And yeah Relapse were my go to label back in the day.
>>129858428>>129857905One of those CDs was put out on Nessa records, and it turns out the guy who ran that label in the 60s (Mike Nessa) lives in my neighborhood. Like 30 or 40 of those were his, he gave me that Lester Bowie reissue his label put out when we were shooting the shit about jazz. Befriend your local boomers. There's another guy who lives around the block from me who listens to tons of jazz and has a yard sale every year. Sold me a bunch of Japanese and Euro import CDs for a buck a piece
>>129858105Not a bad album, but quite possibly the worst album cover of all time
i like pop. i think it's certain from my collection.
>>129861993
>>129860898There's something very satisfying about seeing discographies on a shelf. Would snatch that Snapcase up quick >>129861079>The Black SeaNice. I love Shelby Cinca's work. I got Frodus' And We Washed Our Weapons... on CD a month or two ago for dirty cheap. One of the best post-hardcore albums no one talks about.
>>129860847Walmart never stopped selling that slop; it's no indication that "CDs are BACK!". But if marked-down Backstreet Boys compilation discs and Danielle Steele novels at Walmart are the best you can do for a flex, take a win for yourself.
>>129855658>Is your selection any good or is it just tame slop? Also in ABQ and it's pretty alright, lots of modern stuff and lots of random older stuff or remasters. There's no rhyme or reason about what they get in. I also saw a lot of CDs for sale at BB in D.C as well.
>>129863421Again, you said brick and mortar stores weren't selling them. Walmart and Target both sell CDs. Last time I checked, those are major stores. Pretty much every album that comes out now is also put out on CD. Vinyl doesn't have a stranglehold on physical formats anymore. Not a win for myself. It's just a fact of life.
CDs are still sold in pretty much any electronics store in my country. Stranger still is sometimes they get new old stock or strange imports and just put them in among the usual CDs on the racks. I found one of those rare Pet Sounds CDs by Steve Hoffman once among the usual crap, it was pretty neat.
>>129838396>>129859088do you guys know how many cds you have? or have you lost count
>>129866973First anon here, I have no idea whatsoeverProbably around 2000 once you count box sets and stuff
>>129867185>I have no idea whatsoeveri lost track of how many cds i have years ago because im not as organized as some of you guys. you seem to have everything nicely organized on shelves though
>>129838353My porcupine tree cd is torn at the spine as well. I fucking hate digipaks
>>129867517I put mine in those plastic sleaves now, and any unique jewel cases as well.
>>129867462Mine are on shelves, but the organization has seriously fallen apart over the yearsThey're sorted by genre but I gave up on alphabetization
>>129867704mine are mostly on shelves. i usually run out of shelves though and have to get another from savers for $10. i keep them alphabetized though. i started buying cds in 1990. didnt buy much at first but really started to pick up the pace by the turn of the century. sadly, just as i became a collector all the record stores in my state started to close one by one. now there are none
>>129866973second anon here, I have a discogs account and all of my albums are cataloged there, so right now it's 3680 CDs/vinyl/7"s.They're ordered first by genre, then alphabetically, then chronologically.
>>129855230is that built into the wall? looks sick. It would bum me out to have something like that though for my OCD cuz once it's filled up I'd just have to have another shelf somewhere. Would be cool to use that as just a specific collection with another shelf for general stuff. That's the only way my brain would let me do it
>>129838350My CD collection got thrown out by my mom when she moved :(Nowadays all the CDs I have are just thrift stuff that's beat to shit tossed carelessly around my car. There's somehow still a DVD rental store in my neighborhood and the guy got donated a ton of Chinese CDs that he was giving out for free, got some Faye Wong in there and other shit that looks like they're worth somewhere around 40 bucks on ebay
>>129869042I never understand people who sort by genre.
>>129845518They're CDs, not Pokemon cards. You don't tend to by CDs *strictly* for value. That said, I think the only thing I have that's uncommon or "valuable" would Lush's "Topolino" or "Chorus".>>129861993>Marina and the DiamondsNow there's a name I haven't seen in a long time.>>129864777>Walmart and Target both sell CDs.Well, maybe not Target for much longer.>>129858801At 1990s prices, even. Ignoring inflation, anyway.
>>129869380I started doing it when I had about 1500 CDs. Sorting by genre only really starts making sense when you start to have a pretty sizable collection. It simply didn't make sense having 200 CDs of Merzbow right in the middle of my Metal collection, same with about 300 Jazz CDs.I used to have it all together alphabetized, but at a certain point it just got too chaotic and unwieldy. I don't sort by the many subgenres, it's just Metal, Noise/weirdo music, Jazz, Classical, Punk, and a big bunch of albums that just don't fit anywhere else.
>>129870602I think the most expensive CD I've seen at Walmart was like $16 and it was some dumbass Taylor Swift variant or something. Most are like 8ish. You can pick up 80 percent of Metallica's discog there for $5
>>129871335I think it was the first Garbage album they wanted $20 for, and that was $5 off of list. I admit it could be an outlier.
>>129871490That's gotta be a mistake. That Garbage album is a buck at Goodwill all day. Not that it's bad or anything.
>>129869380Why not? Usually when I'm choosing what music to listen to, I'll start by deciding what genre I'm in the mood for
>>129862133That is really nice find, it is the one album I wanted but did not get on CD. I also have the Decahedron CD and that one is really great too.
>>129870602>You don't tend to by CDs *strictly* for value.some collectors do. i was just wondering what sort of rarities you guys might have. oftentimes i discover i have a rare cd in my collection by mistake. sometimes check to see if an album has been reissued and i notice the going price of the original i have. i bought this cd in mint condition the 90s for only $4.00 but see its extremely rare and quite expensive even for trashed copies. only 2 copies listed on ebay one for $199.95 and the other for $225.95. one last sold for $95.00. even the reissue which i got for cheap is expensive
