I have a decent older guitar that needs a truss adjustment, but it was stripped by a previous owner. It is neck through so I can't just bolt on a new one
What do? Should I just get the next size up hex key and grind it down until it fits in?

Mucked around with Cynic - Veil of Maya after knowing it's on E standard. Riff is pretty stretchy and the solo is even more bonkers like what the hell is this sweep picking pattern with just 2 fingers.
Ended up fucking around with my violin, sax and keyboard instead. I'm amazed i can suddenly do some violin fingering without being badly out of tune. I also slowly get how to vibrate it.

That would be a nice touch yeah. Even without that though, I'm loving the look of it. I never really cared for strat shapes all that much but they grew on me and now I want one like this bad.

Are those guitarfetish SBS guitars worth a damn? They have finish blems for $300
>>
>>129842814
That's an option. If it's a soft metal like brass you may be able to get a really sharp cold chisel and a brass jewelers hammer and cut a new slot that you can stick a standard screw driver in. Light taps only, the taps might help loosen it up as well. I would be really hesitant and cautious but if the threads run all the way through the nut use some kind of penetrating oil like kroil or pb blaster. I would actually spray some in a small container and try to use a syringe or something so you only get what you need and get no overspray or excess. There are also extractors you can get that are tapered and fluted, you pound them into the end of the nut and use a socket/wrench/tap wrench to try and back it out. I would recommend a lot of light taps on the end of the rod and then tapping the tend of your wrench instead of trying to pull on it. Pulling on it might just tear the metal but tapping on it will help prevent that and make it more likely to back out. Once it's loose it's trash and you're going to have to replace the nut for about $10. Remember the extractors only work one way, if you turn them clockwise you will probably unseat it.

I like your allen wrench idea though. Use kroil/blaster if you can. Grind it close, you want it tight enough that you have to use that little hammer and tap it in. Same thing as before, use a hammer to tap the end of the end of the hex key but try going back and forth with it. Try to tighten it first, trust me.

If the hole doesn't run all the way through you could drill a small hole dead center and try to get pentrating oil into it that way. I'm talking like and 1/8" hole.

So try in this order from least damaging to most damaging
Ground down hex key
Extractor
Cutting a slot with a chisel.

Stew Mac used to sell a tool for this but it's probably like $500. I would recommend calling around to guitar techs before buying one just for this job. If you live around Detroit I'll extract it and put a new one in there for $100.

>>
>>129843912
You're only supposed to straighten the next out when you're doing fretwork. If you've got a capo on the first fret and .013" near the 12th that's about normal neck relief for a lot of bolt on guitars. Fenders are between 0.010 and 0.012 with a factory setup.

>>
>>129845955
j bass typically has narrower nut although the modern spec p basses have the j bass width. j bass has a larger lower bout and a second pickup near the bridge. running both pickups full scoops the mids which you want for slap because string and fret noise is so prevalent. slap on p bass also sounds fine and you can cut mids at the amp. the bridge pickup adds a lot of low mids around 500hz which will give you that farty/burpy tone. jazz pickups are all single coils so they sound thin on their own. p bass has a split humbucker and it’s a lot more punchy and tighter low end

Why do people buy multiple guitars? The only reason I can figure is maybe a whammy bar, or for different tunings. Other than that there's really no purpose. But I see people with collections of dozens of guitars all tuned to E standard, and it's like "what the fuck are you thinking"?

>>
Im thinking of having my westone downtuned. Now that I have my p bass back I dont want any other bass for standard tuning. However with my p bass back, im seeing how much I dislike the neck on my westone. I had been stuck with it the last 2 weeks but fuck I love my p bass. There's also the fact that I do notice the humbucker pickups do a better job with the Alpha omicron which is something I want to use. Lots of decisions to make about this 2nd bass. I think I can get away sometimes using distortion on the p bass but it'll mostly be the rusty box and chorus on occasion. I think a 2nd bass thats down tuned to Drop C# that can go to Drop A with humbucker pickups is the goal. Maybe doing that with westone not sure though.

What size allen wrench is it supposed to take? In liue of an extractor you could possibly try a t20 or t25 torx driver and pound that in there. Use one in good condition so the edges are still sharp.

>>129846784
The problem with one of those is if the nut it really seized up and it's soft metal you're just going to round out the hole. There's not a lot of meat there, you may be able to go one size up but if that doesn't work you're not going to have anything to grip to. Also you're not able to work them back and forth which would really help out.
>>
>>129847068
time spent on this earth touching the instrument has nothing to do with how committed you were to practicing it. i could technically say I've been playing guitar since i was 12. I'm 36. Does that make me better or worse than you?
>>
>>129847105
if it’s seized you have a high likelihood of breaking the threaded part of the rod in any capacity
>>
>>129847160
The rod is probably carbon steel so as long as the nut is softer that should break first and maybe you'll be able to pull it out. I still think the extractor is his 2nd best option but I'd try the least destructive method first, if he rounds out the hole with the hex key he can still try the extractor.
>>
>>129847237
you would think so but if the nut has been overtightened it has stretched the threaded portion of the rod and it will be significantly weakened

Potentially but you'd hope that it'd start pulling the threads out of the nut 1st if it's softer. However problem and why you could be right in this instance is the male threads will likely be weaker than the female threads so even if the nut is softer it could still start do deform them especially since it could be up to an inch long solid brass. He's fucked then regardless of if he snaps the the end of the rod or the nut splits. I have no idea what metal the nut actually is, if it's brass and the rod is carbon we can at least rule out galling as the problem. I'm honestly just hoping he or who ever owned it before didn't use the proper wrench or didn't fully seat it and that's what caused it to slip in the 1st place. Almost 100% of the old guitars I've ever worked with a stuck nut I was able to break free by just working it back and fourth til it freed itself up. I've had to extract 4 and all of them came out okay, didn't need to chase the threads but that's all anecdotal so whatever.

yeah true. that was my thought process behind using the extractor since there isn’t much torque on a truss rod nut to begin with. I’ve never had any luck on the back and forth on car parts, the clamping load is just too high and there’s typically corrosion. always snaps on me but the method does work

There's still some orange peel on the paint and I didn't fill in the grain as much as I should have, but it looks decent from afar. you can see some indents in the grain and I painted it thin. I'm hoping it will wear through soon enough. The pickups are GFS: bridge is a Lil Puncher and the neck is a Lil Killer.

You know they say that all men are created equal, but you look at me and you look at that 245 lb 5"10 Mountain of a man and you can see that statement is not true. See, normally if you go one on one with another guitarist, you got a 50/50 chance of winning. But I'm a genetic freak and I'm not normal! So you got a 25%, AT BEST, at beat me. Then you add lvl1 slime to the mix, your chances of winning drastic go down. See the 3 way in Missouri, you got a 33 1/3 chance of winning, but I, I got a 66 and 2/3 chance of winning, because lvl1 slime KNOWS he can't beat me and he's not even gonna try!
So Mountain, you take your 33 1/3 chance, minus my 25% chance and you got an 8 1/3 chance of winning in Missouri. But then you take my 75% chance of winning, if we was to go one on one, and then add 66 2/3 per cents, I got 141 2/3 chance of winning in Missouri. See Mountain, the numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster for you

If you want to play in a band get a guitar amp. If you want to piss into the ocean of recorded music online don't. It's that simple.

yeah and they don't play bars they play venues with paid union sound guys that actually give a shit and aren't some regular schmuck running the PA. And you don't have a big PA. and big PA's cost more than a guitar amp. Amps amplify your electric guitar. If you want your electric guitar to be loud, you get a guitar amp. Zoomers and youtube FAGGOTS don't play loud, but regular guys in bands do

If you want to play at all, get a guitar amp. Especially a tube amp. A one knob kustom defender 5 ($100 champ) and sound town 1x12 total up around $300 ffs.
Guitar is a musical instrument. Not a soulless production took for making pop music professionally. Tube amps DO sound better in person and no lil jim video crying about how the room tone doesn’t matter or glenn fucker crying about how tubes dont sound any better than modelers after going through an sm57, mixing console and DAW and being mixed with 10 other instruments can suck my dick. Many of the extra frequencies that sound fuller and more musical in person are indeed “useless” when mixing most standard tuning rock music. But who fucking cares? Musical instruments are meant to sound good in person, when you play them.
>>
>>129850256
bridge mass and saddle/nut material actually matters a bit. it often makes strats sound tolerable solo without effects. fret material also actually changes stuff. all within the realm where EQ can get close, but not exact because sometimes some overtones just arent there to boost or cut.

>>129850232
tonewood bodies
multi vs single piece bodies
body wood period
heavy vs light body for sustain or snap

these are complete and utter nonsense if you know anything about woods inherent inconsistency and the physics of a vibrating string. every piece of or assemblage of pieces of wood will sound slightly different when everything is controlled and there will be no correlation with tree species, only with individual batches of lumber, and every guitar will sound good no what wood is used because it literally does almost nothing. the only piece of wood on a guitar that has a dramatic effect is the neck. the neck will always shift the tone significantly and the dead and live spots on the neck will determine whether a guitar sings or not, and its still more batch/piece dependent than tree species dependent.

t. Actually did an experiment with 20 different guitar parts in college
