What is /mu/s consensus on the listening experience with cassette tapes?
>>129848802cassettes are more high quality than they're given credit for when you listen to them on a decent setup. idk why you'd do it now though, if you want to be a performative analog fag, just get vinyl
>>129848802"quirky" tryhard redditor bullshit
They're the most personal out all physical media formats. Cassettes have the same "warmth" sensation that vinyl creates, but the defects from tape create a much more unique sound that isn't frustrating in the way that damaged vinyl is. At it's worst, you'll have to manually wind up a cassette tape again.Every warp and squeak is entirely exclusive to your copy of the album and can make for a more intimate feeling towards the music.
>>129848802Really shittiest medium. They degrade like vinyl, but they're not as big, and they lack the fidelity of discs and downloads.>>129848852>>129848909F and SPBP>>129848944See above.
>>129848802It was never good, and people were happy to replace tapes with CDs as soon as they got the chance. Myself included.
>>129849311I don't have the experience to draw from buy I assume they would skip less than early portable CD players. There must have been a market for cassettes with people who workout to music.
>>129848802there is cassete player extensions for cars now that cost very little i believe
>>129848802Sometimes cool to record to and then rerecord for a kinda lofi effect if you like that
I enjoy making mixtapes for friends that have decks. We exchange tapes with each other every few months. This was a 90’s one I put together
They take 15 minutes to load. They're worse than floppies if you can even believe that.
>>129848802No record player ever ate my media
>>129848802sucks cause it forces you to listen to the entire albums. good because you can make mixtapes.
>>129848802cds do everything they do betterdigital > anal logs unless you're playing actual reel to reels that don't stretch like shitty cassette tapes
-Not random access. A bit low-fi.Can jamplayers get old and the drives can stop working+don't scratch
>>129853699Easy to rewrite/record with.Small package.Sound quality is good enough if it's a good recording and you have decent audio setup. Not so fragile like CDs or HDDs, you can throw them around and they take the impact with no issues.Biggest drawback is that you have to rewind them and take care that they don't clog up the player head.I still have a full box of casettes from the 90s in the same state I left them.Overall not bad though for me it's more convenient to just use my computer.
>>129848802Obsolete technology. They were fun when I was a kid with a double cassette player, making my own mixtapes. Outside that, I really can't see the appeal. If you grew up with them, you know they're not great. Tape hiss, limited frequency range, magnets deteriorating over time. But I do have a good laugh thinking about all the people here who spend their government issued neetbucks on used cassettes and CDs.
>>129854355>Not so fragile like CDs or HDDs,>player eats tapeo rly?
>>129848802as an unc i think i had them, but i don't remember a thing about em. I think i used CDs more. and ended up going digital
>>129848802Type IIs sound good on my Nakamichi
>>129850702>>129854526If your deck is eating tapes, that is a user error. It means you are a dirty nigga with a dirty idler tire and pinch roller, and can be resolved by gently rubbing each with ISO
>>129848802pure ideology
>>129855916mine's auto-reverse with a second motor for the tape reel that probably burned out. so the capstain pulls tape that the reel isn't taking up.
>>129855916except you don't know it's dirty until it eats the first tape
>>129861020>I didn't know I needed to change my oil until the check engine light came on
>>129854443Same. Tapes were great fun but then cds came out and there was no reason for them or vinyl anymore.
>>129849339Exactly for this reason. It was years before a skip-free CD player was remotely affordable; by that time (y2k), MP3 players were just coming out (although, they were pricey too, at first). Plus, skip-free or not, they were large, bulky & heavy. No one was going to exercise to CD; you had to wear the damn thing on a satchel around your neck.
>>129854355They were also good for replaying a short segment over & over again in a car, if you had a favorite chorus or some such. Disc & digital can't do this well since they don't really have rwd/ffwd of any useability than full track skip. It's aggravating that digital can't do this even today.I've had way more CDs/CDROMs/DVDs be bad out of the box than I've had tapes et. I've probably lost years off my life dealing with the stress. Cassettes just worked.
