Hello /mu/, I posted a thread on here yesterday about comparing acoustic guitars to electric ones, and someone mentioned pinch harmonics, never heard of them before till yesterday. What are they about?
>Although I might instinctively have an idea on what they're about, best to double-check on here.

While we're here, is there anything else I can learn about playing guitar?
Already know palm muting, string bending, tremolo picking.(those were mentioned as well)

You're funny.

It's the squeal sound Dimebag and Zakk Wylde like to do a lot. Basically you let your thumb touch the string as you pick.
You can technically do it on an acoustic but the effect isn't as dramatic.

Thank you. Do they also rotate the pick to allow for the thumb to touch the string? As in instead of touching it with the tip of pick, you touch from the side of pick? I knew instinctively it had to do with the thumb.

You want to strike the string with your thumb right as you pick it. It's kind of difficult, just look up a video explaining how and practice. I struggled to even do one a while ago, now I can play pinch harmonic riffs and hit most of them.

I remember doing that before.
For my previous comment on touching with pick I added a picture for a visual representation because I wasn't being specific.

wow, it sounds like "pinch harmonics" is that cool thing that happens when i'm playing scrapey mutey rhythm. i can't exactly do it at will but i intuitively change my attack and a certain percentage of notes will do it. very cool texture kinda modest mouseish

Keep in mind those harmonics don't happen everywhere. There are a few spots between the pickups where they happen and each spot gives a different squeal. Try different spots until you get it. Lots of distortion also helps

i kinda hamfist the tops of my middle phalanges (had to google it) into the strings as i play them. you get a random distribution of the harmonics
>>
It's unteachable. It's something you have to discover yourself.

Derek Bailey said something interesting about pinch harmonics
