It isn't just a random piece of carpet. The material is chosen because it prevents stands and bass drums from creeping away. I agree that is expensive. It is an important piece of gear for drummers that gig.

Rugs are extremely important so that your hardware doesn't slide around everywhere, but $150 is just ridiculous when you could just buy a normal rug for one fifth of the price and have it work just fine.

I don't have a favorite brand. I mix up heads on a kit and don't particularly care as long as it sounds good. I tend to match what is on the toms, though, but I will put a two ply on the floor tom batter if I have single plys on the "rack toms."
I like Emads on the kick batter. The foam rings give you some options. Everything else is fair game. Coated, uncoated, pinstripes, hydraulics, studio x, ... anything to match the tone I want.
I've tried some cheap chinese heads as an experiment. They work, but don't have the greatest sound. I would not repeat that experiment.
Drum Factory Direct has cheap drum heads. The single ply are pretty good. The double plys are not in my experience. Lots of drum refubisher/flippers use them when selling kits.
