Unpopular opinion. 7 string guitars are 99% of the time for posers who don't even know how to play guitar properly.

You are just right there is nothing to debate. But a 7 string is still useful for the experienced player. Which is why guys like Steve Vai own those.

I believe it's full range right? The equivalent of an 88 key piano?

Like maybe 4 and a half octaves, depends how you tune it really but BEADBE is roughly that much with 24 frets.

Popular opinion: you're a faggot
>>
Why stop at 7?
8 string baritone is where it's at.
>>
Among the 1% would have been Bucky Pizzarelli, one of the first 7-string players back in the late 60s. He played NY jazz, and used the 7 for its sonic and tonal verstility, not for down tuning chug-chug rubbish.

so it is worth getting a 7 string but after you git gud
>>
>>129862653
You only play power chords.
>>
i dont even think thats an unpopular opinion, perhaps its a pseud opinion but I pretty much share it, think I'd sooner try out a 12 string but really when you're playing with a bass why even worry about getting that 7th string? you already have that end covered, imagine your band having a 7string guitar and 5 string bass
>>
>>129861984
kinda difficult to do some chords like an A shaped barre chord, can't do a D for example which is usually x57775, but if you extend it to add the low B it'd ave to be 7557775 which is pretty much impossible, just trying to imagine what the new shapes would look like
>>
>>129864726
Drop the b to an a and you've got a much more feasible bar chord shape

Sure I do limpwrist faggot
>>
idk but those new Dunable 7 strings look pretty good
>>
It all comes down to whether you’re actually gonna use all 7 strings or not
>play solos or chords often that use the high E
7 string is worth it
>otherwise
Just use a 6 string with thicker strings (11s or 12s)

djent fags have always sucked at music
>>
>>129861522
Nah you need two guitars and a 6 strings bass to reach the range of a piano

how 'bout 8 strings?
>>
>>129865234
shitcore bands that tune to anything other than standard will just chug the low E ad naeusum and shouldn't be playing extended range in the firstplace.
>>129866296
meshuggah and archspire haven't proven their utility I feel.
>>

reading tabs isnt real music

i bought the 8 because of diamond eyes
>>
>>129866532
my bad, I meant those bands have proven the viability of 8 string guitars
>>129866579
good album, but why did it make you want to pick up an 8? the guitars are mostly supporting, even in the "djent" sections, its pretty simple.
>>
>>129866655
idk i just liked the rhythmic/chord approach steph used. simple but effective. i've always been more into chords than riffs. if you've got long spider fingers like me, you can do some really cool chords on an 8
>>
>>129866676
Yeah fair enough, nothing wrong with writing for supporting the song.
>if you've got long spider fingers like me, you can do some really cool chords on an 8
agreed. having long, thin fingers also, the neck just feels more comfortable with the extra range.
>>
>>129861503
When I played Death <etal tuned to B, I nearly bought a 7 string just to save the pain of down tuning. that's the only benefit, 7 you might be gay, 8+ plus and you're a turbofaggot
>>
>>129866750
you sucked ass at death metal anyway
