Psalm 9 has such a sick riff
>>
>>129865129
for me it's that short groovy riff after the solo in the fall of lucifer and then the stomping one afterwards, sounds so fucking cool
>>

I also like the one where they quote alice cooper's unfinished sweet, really badass and unlike alice they repeat it more, which was the right call

agreed, the version in assassin has more time to sink in. by the time i was starting to get into the cooper riff it was already onto the next one.

Damn, I forgot.
Some of I think has to do with some of those end of year releases being released earlier somewhere else compared to the rest of the world...
Gonna add another vote for The Divine Wings of Tragedy then (originally I thought it came out in 1997 - but no, it came out in 1996 in Japan and therefore counts as a '96 album).

What a killer song. Pretty much the only good one on the whole album (other than previously recorded ones like Am I Evil). I can see how it apparently inspired Seek and Destroy.

It's funny reading the earliest Kerrang and see how Def Leppard saw themselves and how fans and critics saw them. And the fact that they plainly said that they didn't think that High N' Dry got a good reception because Saxon's Denim and Leather was released around the same time and was so undeniably heavy metal.

Colombian thrash (obviously influenced by Sepultura). I would maybe recommend this since it was released in 1996, it was however self-released and didn't get a label release until 2016.
It is a good album overall, and in Spanish.

>>129945807
In regards to what genre the first album is, perhaps groove/thrash on some songs. Not really sure.
You could probably call stuff on their second album nu metal, but that wouldn’t describe much on their first album.
The albums after the debut album are definitely less metal and also not as aggressive or heavy. Though traces remain.

It could be that metal archives didn’t accept them or it could be that no one submitted them. I don’t know which is the case. The first album only had 4000 copies released, so it may be somewhat obscure. Or just overshadowed by their non metal albums.

Outside is one of several ballads from their 3rd album, which is significantly different from their first album (and even their second to some extent).
If their first album was like that, I wouldn’t have submitted it.

Ok, i have listened to most of the Tormented record. And you must either be trolling or be fucking retarded. This is 100% nu-metal, it even has that shitty numetal beat in every single song like all other numetal bands. At best it's badly played stoner rock

Surf rock and old hardcore punk is more metal sounding than this.

What sort of beat are you referring to? There’s no way it’s 100% nu metal. The last 2 songs aren’t even hard rock.

Maybe you could call it some weird mix of stuff, but I feel like some songs are too fast to be typical nu-metal. Would it count as alt metal? Anyways I don’t think it’s gonna get on the chart.

Are there any standout songs from Load? I never listened to most of it.

Aside from that, if you liked Chaos AD, it's worth checking Roots out in any case. While it's not exactly traditional metal (and wouldn't really fit on the chart), It's not a total departure from Sepultura's previous album.

i will say, i think the highs off look at yourself are much stronger than a lot of the stuff off d&w. look at yourself, shadows of grief and especially july morning imo are heep's best work. only song off demons that i think is up to that standard is rainbow demon (and maybe the spell, but i haven't listened to that one in a while)

D&W as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The individual tracks are all very good of course, but the way they flow together and compliment one another to create an overall experience is what puts the record in the upper echelon for me. It's a masterpiece in album crafting.
Top track for me is probably The Wizard

I think Gary Barden has a great voice, but it's not an exceptional one. He's not a Division 1 vocalist. For a vocalist to reach Division 1 I think they have to have an an exceptional and unique voice like Dio, Coverdale, Dickinson, Halford, Tate etc etc. Something that is instantly recognizable.

Anyways, good album.

This isn't bad but it's WAY too overproduced.
>>
Okay, I'm gonna rant now. How the fuck can a band made up of literal legends who were part of some of the best albums in metal sound so shit? Despite having Andy LaRocque, Mikkey Dee and Nils K. Rue they sound so washed and lifeless jesus christ.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QhmkfLI1bA
Meanwhile a bunch of fucking nobody Italians managed to nail both sound and production of Merciful Fate/King Diamond both bands were supposedly going for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44xvkvuc7jU
Just compare the two lmao.
Idk, if it is the curse of mid-level bands who fall into the trap of modern shit production because it is the "industry standard", meanwhile smaller bands don't give a shit and know what they actually want in their sound. But I'm so fucking disappointed.

lol, night and day difference.
has there ever been one of these dream team bands that were actually any good?

I found that Riot's Fire Down Under US mix is punchier.

I wasn't aware that they were different mixes of that
>The album was re-issued on CD in 1997 by the German-based High Vaultage label, utilizing a new, controversial remix by former Riot producer Steve Loeb, and in 1999 by Metal Blade Records in the U.S., this time featuring the original Elektra mix. The album was reissued in 2014 courtesy of Varèse Sarabande. All three versions contain various bonus tracks recorded for the original Capitol Records version of Fire Down Under which the band were unhappy with. Capitol dropped the band for being "too heavy" after hearing the final version subsequently released by Elektra Records.. In 2018 the album was reissued, remastered and with six bonus tracks, by Rock Candy Records.
Shit like this almost makes me never want to listen to the album again.

>I wasn't aware that they were different mixes of that
yeah, the elektra mix is generally more raw and sounds less produced. though i feel that it has way too much bass. the guitars get sucked up by it on a few songs, namely outlaw and don't hold back.

Wrap this up by adding the 2 votes before the next thread?
>>
>>130020755
we're one short of being able to fill it fully with 2 votes so i'll add a 1

List of nominations?

>Capitol dropped the band for being "too heavy"

Sounds like bullshit, didn't they sign Megadeth?

I'll throw in a vote for Bathory and Mercyful Fate. Surprised they only got one.
>>
>>130020937
alright, i'll go finalize it.
>Surprised they only got one.
same here, i thought at least the bathory release would've gotten more.
>>
That Mercyful Fate album is so generic, I feel like it's only included because it's Mercyful Fate.
>>
>>130020919
If there's a spot left, I want to nominate Therion - Theli.

i just finished the chart, but since you cast your vote while i was working on it i'll put it on in lieu of bathory
>>
1996's chart is DONE! we'll be starting 1997's in the next thread.

With 1997 coming up, here's my chart that can act as a reminder of what came out that year. Mostly power metal, and another huge year for the genre, with several big bands like Hammerfall, Nightwish, Edguy, Primal Fear and Iron Savior releasing their debuts. I expect Gamma Ray to be an automatic inclusion.

Obscure but good power metal.

there were a few of these i didn't know about, thanks
>I expect Gamma Ray to be an automatic inclusion.
listening to that next, i loved the highs off the previous album so i'm pretty fuckin' excited

>>130021443
Absolutely, so many good albums that year.

That's my favorite Gamma Ray song of all time.
>>
>>130022573
i see why, that was one of the best things i've heard in a while and EASILY clears any other song i've heard from the band. kind of bummed that cosmic chaos couldn't keep up that momentum, though. everything up to that point besides pray was damn near flawless.
>>
>>130022605
*lost in the future
got the two mixed up lol
>>
>>130022605
It's one of the few Gamma Ray songs not written by Kai Hansen, that's why it sounds so unique.
>>
>>130022695
makes sense, that song (and specifically its use of the keyboard and the way it duels with the guitar) doesn't sound like something i'd hear from helloween or gamma ray. the only comparison i can come up with off the top of my head is a light in the black by rainbow.

it's a lot proggier than i expected. i'm on track 4 and it's pretty good so far, opening track was fantastic but nothing else has been on that tier yet.
