I would say it was a better session than an album. The songs are great, the cast of musicians is steller, and the performances always energetic and passionate with a raw live feel, with Bowie laying down some of his most powerful vocal takes ever, but I think he second guessed himself too much at the post-production stage and kind of dulled the effect he was originally going for.

young americans has probably some of the best vocals bowie ever recorded, but they're being used on very middling tracks. i still think the tour (which was a bastardized half diamond dogs/half young americans tour) has some of the most interesting reinventions of his older tracks, they're a lot more funky. too bad he fucked his voice up pretty early on in the tour
