This album is probably what autism sounds like.

So someone explain the whole Devo thing to me. What was its deal
>>129871769they're the original quirky chungus band
>>129871769They wanted to be social critics, but were so ironic with it, that the people who listened to it didn't realize they were critical. They became a laughing stock for the normies.
I liked their hits, but never had the desire to dig into their disography. I think we only know of them because of their media attention, but there were so many better fun oddball bands a little less out of the spot light - Oingo Boingo, They Might be Giants, Ween. I know I'm dipping into the 90s, but I never got into Devo besides the hits

MOGOLOID
The documentary on Netflix of them that came out semi-recently is a really good watch, goes into what the goals of the band were, where it went wrong, etc.A ton of social commentary about (go figure) the de-evolution of society and were ahead of the time on a lot of the things they were singing about. Musically though, at least their 'core' group of albums, probably not for everyone but this was at a time when there weren't really anyone doing comparable types of music. Their gear setup in the early days would blow a lot of people's minds I think.Clockout, Space Junk, Don't You Know. 3 good songs from first 3 albums, have at 'em. A strange, strange band that takes a bit to get into but their history of DIY, super artsy-stuff is just really interesting to me.
I bought a used Devo greatest hits CD as a kid as a joke "the flowerpot band lol" and it was my first introduction to real punk rock music. Bought it for Whip It but We're Through Being Cool was the pivotal song for me
>>129876167This may come off as hipsterish, but their best material is in the Hardcore Devo comp albums
>>129878043Social Fools is definitely one of my favorite songs by them.
I woke up this morning and listened to "Mongoloid" and "Gut Feeling" first thing on my laptop. I've been thinking about those songs since yesterday. And now I see this thread.I'm going to take this as a sign to listen to the whole album.https://youtu.be/NSVlJRhGIUU?si=eoTkjSI82dskFqsuThis slowed down version is pretty good
>>129871196always thought that Nigel was about parents in denial of their autistic kid
>>129871054YOU GOT YOUR RIGHT HAND
>>129871769Gerry Casale was a part of Students for Democratic Society at Kent State during the late 60s early 70s during far-left radical surge. They protested Nixon for expanding the war into Cambodia and then saw their friends get shot by the National Guard. After that, they decided the system was "devolving", becoming stupider, more materialistic, and conformist. They made some short films and decided to add music to it that reflected this "de-evolution" concept.
>>129880121>listening to slowed down versions
>>129871769Rich kids dicking around
>>129879050great song
>>129871769They bullied Robot Jones
>>129875299>>129880401>>129882055Thank you for the replies. It was sort of a post modern performance piece? About how society was getting stupider because muh Nixon? So they were proto bluehairs shrieking about Trump basically?
>>129889025>So they were proto bluehairs shrieking about Trump basically? They actually make great music so no.
>>129871054devo are the best band ever
