Tonight's listen:Gene Clark - No OtherI was late to the party on this ex-Byrd's 1974 cult classic, only having heard it for the first time last year. Perhaps I shouldn't feel too guilty though, as No Other took decades to receive its due from critics and the public alike. The album has "labour of love" written all over it. Clark's method of fusing country and rock music was far more nuanced than anything Gram Parsons did with the Byrds or Burritos, making Sweetheart of the Rodeo sound almost hamfisted by comparison. The guitar work is as soulful as it is twangy, and the backing vocals give some songs a near-gospel feel. Recording costs for the album went way over budget, and it shows: Each song is polished to an immaculate sheen, with every element blending seamlessly. If anything, I might argue the production is a little too perfect for Clark's voice. 9.1/10https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfwdIwwgR0k
