How is he so bad? I'm a better drummer than Lars and I'm just some guy living with my parents. He's been playing drums all the time for 40 years.
He gives Metallica that lurching akward element. We hate on it but sterile metal bands are a dime a dozen these days.
>>129878098His drumming style plays more the role of a cheerleader for the band than of a metronome
>>129878098he was at the right time and knew the right people
>>129878098He was good up to AJFA
>>129878098You should stop getting "better" when you get big.You should start not fucking with the formula.
>>129878165Never thought of it that way but you're right. Modern metal drumming, despite how technical it tries to be, is so stale and boring I wish someone would try to bring back some early Lars style parts even though they're "easy".
how does Lars have no ability to come up with an anti-Napster argument? https://youtu.be/6r6wn47_Vqsmust have slept through the trial.
>>129879877Lars was right about Napster, no matter how "anti-metal" his stance seemed. He was just the worst possible person to become the face of the anti-Napster campaign.
>>129878098He has every right to rest on his laurels because he wrote the greatest drum parts in metal as well as helped write the greatest albums in metal history. Yeah he sucks now in old age. Who cares? His youthful vitality was captured on tape, everything past that is irrelevant
Because drums don't really matter in sellout metal. Casual listeners listen for the vocals and rhythm guitar and the more autistic ones focus on guitar pyrotechnics. Bass player is just there to look cool.
>>129878098generically speaking, people go through phases. lars was agile enough at the outset and good at phrasing. never a tech bro full thrash guy like the genre developed into. has lars ever even played a double? an ostinato? hes full meat fist alternating basic with a good sense of what works and phrasing. he refused the turn to technique and in contrast got into even simpler drumming cuz of like acdc n shit. not a bad idea, but he let it overcome all the other options of development. some of us become "oh shit jazz" and then become like "oh shit zach hill" and choose to grow. he did not.
>>129879930It really stopped making sense for him to spam double bass drum fills and play supertechnical since the black album. Once they went mainstream, nobody cares about that shit. Normies don't care about great solos either.
>>129880115yes, but given how close he and james were as collaborators, imagine if his 'pushing in new directions' wasnt some cringey off beat snare hit like in the doc
>>129878098he’s always been more of a wrangler/promoter than just a drummer, so he doesn’t bother practising
>>129880089it's weird cuz lars is a big jazz fan, he's related to dexter gordon
>>129878098He's not a good drummer. He really isn't.And their success? You know what? A lot of is based off of me
>>129880793how can a jazz fan not even have a ride in his kit
>>129878098It's almost strategic as it was coincidental. >James doing his faggy country style singing>LARS SUCKS>Kirk getting exposed for his one trick pony solos thus omitting from them all together>LARS SUCKS>Every single bassist after Cliff fucking sucks (Jason is a lazy root note player and Robert tries too hard to be technical but failing to match the music unlike Cliff)>LARS SUCKS
>>129884841based Lars taking hits for the team
>>129884841Lars is unironically very high IQ but just misunderstood and he was 100% right about (((((Napster)))))) and where the music industry was heading
>>129878098Lars has made more money for himself than the rest of Metallica, he must be doing something right. I'm sure that you are the best drummer living in you mommy's basement.
>>129884935you dumb fucking nigger lars is part of the reason the record labels have an even tighter iron grip on the industry compared to 25 years ago
This has nothing to do with thread, but the other day, I wondered what it would be like if each member of Metallica worked on a solo project. I could easily picture what each of them would do—in fact, Kirk released a LP a few years ago—but I couldn't imagine what Lars would do.
>>129888240Drummers rarely break out by themselves...except Ringo. They'll join a supergroup or something. If they're good at all. Like Dave Lombardo. Not Lars.
>>129888259Oh and Dave Grohl. Duh.
>>129888040I'm a mediocre drummer. Not pretending to be any more. Lars is worse.
>>129878888
>>129888280Not that I'm defending Lars Ulrich, but seriously, are you saying you've played hundreds of 2h shows in your late 50s / early 60s?
>>129888271He was a multi instrumentalist growing up, and probably would have been the frontman in band if he hadn't joined Nirvana or stayed in Scream. He already did the Pocketwatch tape and then was working on the stuff that ended up on the first Foo Fighters album while he was in Nirvana, likely expecting to be fired at any time since he was the last in a long line of drummers.
>>129888353Listen to his timing nigga. Just pull up literally any Metallica live performance.
>>129878098He proved his greatness in the 80s and 90s. But he is simultaneously great and horrible.
>>129880793no clue, but if you say so. still, i cant think of any playing he does where he isnt just alternating meathooks
the drum sound on St Anger is so laughable, its so obviously unintentional, they fucked up their production both intentionally and unintentionally throughout their discog like cranking the bass way too low on AFJA, after hearing a bass enhanced version I will never go back
>>129889157lol this againlove st anger sound. eat crow.
>>129879915>because he wrote the greatest drum parts in metalSuch as?
>>129889613harvester of sorrow is pretty dope bro
>>129878888Lmao, quads of truth, frenzied monkey Lars, real life Luther from the Warriors.>>129878098His drumming is fucking fine
>>129889613Disposable Heroes, 4 minute mark. The drumming is impossibly tasty and just trounces almost anything else in metal
>>129879891>Lars was right about NapsterThere's this website, you may have heard of it, it's called youtube.
>>129889051>meathooksWhat's that?
>>129890765hands, bro
>>129890711nevermind, he cant even pull it off in his heydayhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp-7hB-8jJY
>>129890750>The drumming is impossibly tastySure.>and just trounces almost anything else in metalLol no.
>>129890871Are you implying I am brown or a foreigner?
>>129880793>related to dexter gordonthe jewish Danish guy is NOT related to the black American guy.Dexter Gordon is just his godfather.
>>129888094>doesn't elaborate Yes the drummer of Metallica is the reason why and not the advent of streaming you bloated homosexual
>>129892083He is you absolute troll, he started the lawsuit that led to stricter control of "intellectual property"
Success is about appealing to a large number of people. In music that is done with songs. Metalica wrote cool songs and did it differently than anyone else at the time. None of those guys were virtuosos... Cliff may have been getting there. They are a cohesive unit that plays appealing songs in a somewhat unique way. That is the secret to success. Do you have good songs? Do you have a band that has a sound that appeals to people? No?
>>129879915Honestly, this.
They could never make me hate the heel drummer
>>129892368>None of those guys were virtuosos...Kirk was and always will be
