Tonight's listen:Danny and the Fat Boys - American MusicEver heard of Danny Gatton? If there were any justice in the world, this album would have been the first step on his path to international recognition. However, fate would instead destine him to be one of the world's greatest unknown guitarists. Released in 1975, American Music partially functions as a vehicle for Gatton's virtuosity in a variety of home-grown styles ranging from jazz to blues to country to whatever "Memphis Disco Funk" is. The rest of the band isn't half bad either. As is the case with a Roy Buchanan record, the vocals (provided by another group member) are serviceable but not the focal point of the music -- except on the doo-woppish opening track which features a vocal group alleged to be the Clovers. Following this record, Gatton would continue playing small venues in the D.C. area and releasing albums under his own name, including two for a major label. In 1994 his depression overcame him and he shot himself, depriving the world of an immense talent. It sounds like any 1950s sort of music I have heard, and therefore, I could not finish it. At least you are doing something for this dead board fat man, good on ya.My recommendation is an interesting one, a little farther in time then you seem to enjoy. The Brothers and Sisters - Dylan's Gospel. Really interesting take on some of Dylan's better written sung by a gospel group.
