Originally humankind were no better than animals were, they were both one and the same, it wasn't until humans ate the forbidden fruit that they rose above the animals, and this upset God because it gave humans more leverage over the world he created. The story was originally just meant to explain why humans have to wear clothes and have social norms while animals don't, but the implications are far deeper than this.
