What would their career be like today if Lisa had remained with the group and hadn't woman-driver'd herself to death in Honduras?

Nostalgia tours playing in theaters, bitterness, resentment.

these kind of groups are basically disposable, get a few hits out of them when they're young and cute and then throw them overboard for the next one

Sucks because these girls were actually really talented

Look at Destinys Child, they got more mileage than that out of Beyonce, and TLC was better albeit not better looking. Ripping off McCartney II was inspired

The genre they belonged to is effectively dead even if I love it and still listen to R&B from that era. There are things that are kinda like it now but it's not quite the same. People are getting back into the aesthetic but not the sounds. The only person who tried to go in that direction was Bruno Mars but he does that with every era's R&B, Funk, and adjacent rock music.

>actually
i genuinely think mid/late 90s / early 00s mainstream RnB had a lot of great talent. I'm not even a huge vox fan, like I couldn't tell you if Ashanti had a better voice than Brandy or whatever, not my wheelhouse at all, but the production and vox melodies on a lot of very popular RnB from that era was incredibly forward thinking and genuinely experimental shit. And that shit was straight up mainstream getting mad radio play. It's a rare combo when stuff that weird ends up with mainstream success imo

CrazySexyCool [La Face, 1994]
Three great songs here: in ascending order, the cheater's whisper "Creep," the sisters' sermon "Waterfalls," and the wet dream's statement of principle "Red Light Special." The filler sustains, the skits are funnysexycool, the male rappers rock. But other wet dreams end badly--a guy would have to be pretty hard up to sustain four minutes interest in "Let's Do It Again"'s vow of lifelong intromission--and the project's caution is summed up by the Prince cover. Really, ladies, the brilliance of "If I Was Your Girlfriend" was that a guy was singing it. B+

only when you have certified legend status like Etta or Aretha could you get away with that, and these chicks weren't on their level.

where would Beyonce be without hubby's money/Payola machine? probably as washed as surviving TLC members and Brandi.
>>
TLC are the greatest pop girl group of all time, but they're still just that, a girl group. The wrote some of the greatest pop songs of all time like No Scrubs, Waterfalls, and Creep, but their sound never progressed. If they'd been together we probably would've gotten more pop songs just like those, but that kind of music doesn't progress. At best, it kind of stays the same, so for me, this isn't really a "what if."

Impossible, the girl was psycho

three albums and all sound exactly like the year they were released

Music was different too though, hard to imagine Aretha Franklin dominating the charts today she’d be a full time gospel singer

Etta James was a teenybopper act in the early days with Johnny Otis and only later became a mature soul singer. Some singers can grow into adult performers, others can't.
