Tonight's listen:Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band - Trout Mask ReplicaWhat is there to say about this album that hasn't already been said? Over half a century on, Beefheart's art-meets-fart opus remains as divisive as pineapple on pizza or abortion. Between the challenging, deliberately shambolic-sounding rhythms and surreal lyricism, Trout Mask Replica is sometimes considered a litmus test for one's ability to appreciate experimental or avant-garde music as a whole. Personally, I admire Van Vliet's artistic vision but can't always bring myself to enjoy the fruits of said vision. At times I'll be drawn in by Trout Mask's freak-blues charms, only to be promptly pulled back out when the next song starts a minute later. It's unfortunate that many people have been turned off of Beefheart after jumping straight into this album because it's widely cited as his masterpiece. Rather, it should be treated as the final boss of his discography; the culmination of all his weirdness. I still prefer Safe as Milk, but this listen of TMR was the least painful one yet. he did it, TMR review! glad you liked it more than previous listens, it's a real grower, i like it more on every listen and i even outright enjoy the album by now. you hear shades of 90s post-hardcore at times. the aggression mixed with noodley-ness(?) is something you just didn't get in rock music for a while in quite that way for a while.
>>129899310Honestly I found TMR kind of thin and plodding compared to his other stuff. It really didn't need to be a double album. I much prefer Safe as Milk.Anyway, my nomination for the tum is Chicago Transit Authority (1969).
>>129899310This is my favourite mu thread apart from the tapmusic.net chart threads
>>129899530No doubt it's unique for its time (except for Lick My Decals Off)>>129899572I'm not a big enough Chicago fan to own any of their albums, but perhaps I could stream it and digitally superimpose it onto the tum>>129899588thx lad
>>129899610CTA is worth owning I think, along with their next couple albums. Early Chicago is absolute kino.
>>129899614I'll try to check it out, I know the hits but worry it'll be brass overload
Love TMR and especially what he achieved on tracks like pachuco cadaver and sweet sweet bulbs. That said Mirror Man Sessions became my obsession, its like the peak of blues to me. Also observatory crest is a beautiful song
>>129899726There's a lot of brass but the integration with the standard four-piece rock unit is perfectly complimentary. Especially on the early albums there are a lot of times where the core band gets to jam out with little or no brass support. And for all the adulation Terry Kath rightfully gets as a guitar god I think everybody in that classic lineup was a monster on his instrument and together a monster ensemble.
>>129899310I liked the first few reviews you made but you’ve been pretty low effort this last week. This post is a new low.
>>129900069How so? If anything I've been putting more effort into them since then
>>129900069>>129900089For reference this is what my first few reviews were like, not sure how they've gotten worse since
What was your favorite track?
>>129899310could you do an album by the kinks next?
>>129900217Probably one of the more accessible ones like Moonlight on Vermont or China Pig, but that could change if I get used to the twists and turns of the more difficult ones>>129900223All I have by them is the expanded version of their debut and a box set that mixes singles, album tracks, live versions, demos, and other rarities, so I could do a disc from thatGonna have to start a spreadsheet of suggestions soon, damn
>>129899813Halfway through the album now, your assessment seem pretty accurateHowever,>mfw Free Form Guitar
