I really wish we had footage of the process of them assembling the parts in early stages. The stories of him playing the piano and then John French taking those dissonant parts and translating them to sheet music for different instruments sounds so insane. They must've sounded much worse on piano. But yeah assembling contrasting melodies and sticking by them all the way to the finished product is something that takes a determined and enchanted mind. I try writing shit like that every fourth year and I'll like it to an extent but it ends up being really forced and the whole time I'm overcome with uncertainty

You could actually just improvise shit with a band with a few constraints and parameters, get multiple recordings, stitch together the best parts, then transcribe and rehearse it.I've found that a lot of "how'd they do it" moments in art were actually just worked out backwards
