Can someone explain the second chord to me, the Eb aug (b9 #9)? That finger pattern doesn't even contain a Eb note (guy is using a capo on the 6th fret so the 6 on the A string is a 12)

thanks man, it really doesn’t feel that way with chords for me at times. I see a lot of guitarists say they just practice chord transitions for 10 mins a day and they’ve got it mastered in like a month. maybe they’re overstating their real abilities but it’s more like 4-6 months for me. lead has been no issue but it doesn’t feel right to have such a large disparity between the two
>>
>>129920919
Yeah I fucked that bit up, thank you

>>129920991
the 6th fret of the A string is an Eb. guitarists do this weird thing where they don’t acknowledge the key change when using a capo and it drives me crazy. no wonder so many of them don’t understand theory or know their fretboard; they’re being sabotaged by their own educators

I was looking at some Japanese ones but I wanted a vintage style neck with a fat profile and most sellers don’t give you that information and I didn’t want to ask a ton of people questions about it. US 1965 reissues are basically unanimously known for having fatter necks than the reissues of previous years so I focused on that reissue year. Basically there’s the current production AVII line or the AVI line from a decade ago, and of those I wasn’t picky but this AVI’s price is what won me

>>129921216
same methodology for walking basslines. I mean there’s really only so many things you can do: pedal, chord tones, scalar approach, chromatic approach, scalar and chromatic ascension/descension. they all work and form the basis, but the mastery is weaving them in a way that creates movement and “tells a story.” I have 4 books on walking basslines and they all have the exact same information :(
>>
>>129921241
with bass you can basically just fake it if you keep time
just slide the wrong notes a fret and it'll work
>>
>>129921256
that’s pretty true, there is a lot more room for bass movement that most people believe. I find that you should at least establish the true root once every two bars or the harmonic center really falls apart

>>
>>129921366
People with bigger hands are better off with wider necks and larger string spacing than thick necks, but all electric guitars have about the same neck width for some reason with barely any variation

Anything I can do as a bassist to help lead my guitarist better in jams? I'm not 100% sure what they mean by that. When we play i don't play any particular progression. I just play notes in the key in no particular order. I usually try to end the 4th beat on the 7th or 2nd since they add tension when returning home. I'll usually go root 5th 3rd root. But I can't seem to find a good way of exploring while jamming with my ear being unable to pick up on what my guitarist is doing.
>>
>>129921564
have him lay out the progression he is doing in simple chords before he starts noodling. if he can't do this, you are fucked.
>>
>>129921587
I remember asking this once and then she told me to pick one. I have no idea what scale degrees make a good progression so we decided to just play whatever.
>>
>>129921564
Split your measures right before the chord changes into two halves of two beats or whatever you play. Play your riff/melody in the first two beats and use the last two beats to steadily walk to the next root note. I’m guessing your guitarist is completely relying on you to remember the song which is wrong. But you can still lob your band softballs and play creatively. Before BBA has another fit about James Jamerson you can just study some of his lines. He literally covers everything you need to know about modern bass playing except complex time signatures
>>
>>129921653
Unless you guys are truly just improvising without a song structure then yeah that’s on you as a bassist to signal a key change. I’d recommend walking to the next chord over the entire bar
>>
>>129920911

>>
>>129921662
Also if you’re just playing random stuff you have to look at playing the bass as whatever you are doing, the laws of nature are going to feel like the song is going to automatically resolve itself on beat 1 every two bars. If you don’t go back to the root at that point it changes the tonal center to the listeners ear and it feels like a key change. I’ve been playing for 4 years. I can do whatever I want every two bars but I have not found a way to go 3 without fucking up the song
>>
>>129921443
>but all electric guitars have about the same neck width for some reason with barely any variation

Does anyone know if the chorus progression that starts around the 2:00 has a name? I swear I've heard that sound a bunch before and that is something i feel I could learn and bring to my jams.

>>129921662
Yeah we improv without a song. It's fully just make it up on the spot and find something that works. Moving to a new key without saying it out loud is another thing I'm not sure how to do. I have a book on walking bass lines i started yesterday so hopefully it'll explain a bit more of the walking concept.
>>
>>129921706
gibson is wide at the 12th fret, rick is very narrow at the 12th fret.

or you can just buy a guitar with SH config and a acoustic, happy days
>>
>>129921722
there’s going to be a difficulty curve if you don’t verbalize the key change. the easiest way to do it is play eight notes and walk up in an incredibly linear way. say you are working on going from 1 to 4: R R, 2 2, b3 b3, 3 3, then you arrive at 4 on your downbeat. that’s the easiest you can make it without verbalizing it. In the meantime I would work on condensing what you are playing into one and two-bar phrases that repeat themselves periodically. Walking over a single chord will seem very repetitive and riff-based, there’s no getting around it. Walking is great for getting used to the sound of bass movement and getting used to the fretboard and chord changes, but there are still so many notes you can play that it doesn’t mean your band will be able to follow you along to an improvised progression. Bass is great and fun but it dictates the entire harmony for the rest of the ensemble so keep in mind that you need to provide some form of stability and familiarity for your band mates.

Any anons got any advice to introducing kids to the guitar?

My nephew is turning six in one month and he says he wants a guitar like me. Whenever he comes around my house he always wants to play my guitar and I try to teach him but his hands are still too small and puny. He also doesn't have parents who are in any way musical, they don't even listen to guitar music but he seems keen but of course children are scatterbrained and have a million distractions these days beyond sitting down and practicing an instrument.

I was thinking about getting him a lyre harp and teaching him really simple songs that are applicaple for a child like nursery rymes and shit but i'm wondering if anons have a better clue than me
>>
>>129921888

If he wants a guitar, get him a guitar. I feel like anything else would be disappointing. Maybe a fender nylon (Fa-25n) or some other 3/4 acoustic. Both affordable and smaller than normal so it'll be easier for him.
Loog if you want something specifically meant for kids, but theyre a bit pricey for what they are. It may encourage him to learn more though. 3 strings are less daunting than 6.
>>
>>129921938
this is true that kids are more capable than people think but a baby Taylor at least functions and sounds very close to a full size guitar
>>
>>129921952
True, but buying a $500 guitar for a 6 year old is a bit silly. But hey if he takes care of his stuff, I guess it's worth it, he'll have something of quality.
I just know me at 6 would have accidentally destroyed it somehow.
>>
>>129921981
I’d recommend the 3 year replacement plan at guitar center in that case, unironically. but hey at least it’s not student model violin that’s like $4000
>>
>>129921981
>>129921952
Absolutely no fucking way am I buying a six year old a baby fucking taylor

He needs to prove to me first he is motivated before I spend anything more than £50 on him. Hence why i'm looking at a lyre harp instead, because he can learn songs quicker and enjoy playing music. I have no idea if a six year old in this day and age had the patience to go through the early pain of learning chords and shit

This is why i'm wondering if any anons have done the same because i'm wondering how to approach a childs sensibility

I also have my own first guitars that I got when I was a kid. a 3/4 acoustic and a half size electric which I plan to give him when the time is right

Yamaha or Eastman. bear in mind Yamahas specs are Yamaha, their dreadnought are damn near all the same size shape and string spacing. If you want something with Martin specs on a budget you’ll need to Eastman but if you don’t care I’d get a Yamaha and call it a day.

Eastman also makes short scale slope shoulders (J45). If this is your first acoustic you probably don’t care that much but just throwing it out there.

What does a J bass have that a P bass doesnt?
>>
>>129924470
J
>>
>>129924470
it’s probably better for slap because turning both pickups all the way up scoops the mids, but imo very very few songs sound better with slap.
>>
>>129924470
You can make a J sound close to a P but not the other way around
>>
>>129924344
>pick up bass
>play along to 3 or 4 songs I know for warm up ~25 mins
>maybe do scales ~10 minutes
>try to focus on book work then get bored ~15 mins
>try to learn some new songs ~ 1 hour
>randomly jam along to drum track ~15 minutes
I will probably extend the learn new songs to hour and a half. I would say majority of my practice time is spent on learning new songs vs fundamentals or shit that really helps but I LOVE fucking playing along to songs I've been listening to for years. The jamming with the drums track is probably the most helpful
>>
>>129924490
>>129924491
>>129924503
I will look into it. I might just get another P bass and drop tune that but I think of i drop tune a J bass that could be cool
>>
>>129924518
they’re all fine but look up some videos of a stingray bass. think those work really well with drop tunings but keep in mind they weigh like 30 pounds

>>

idk but apparently they are having a rough go with their qc
>>
>>129924411
>deep learning
you mind elaborating, please?
>>
>>129924658
break the song down into segments, typically phrases. learn the intervals, what chord they’re being played over, why it works, why they played it etc, learn the rhythm so I can mess with the rhythm or play other intervals with the same rhythm to see how it sounds. I take everything good and turn it into licks, to put it into layman’s terms, but in a way where I can transpose them into different keys and rhythmic sequences. it’s nothing crazy but goes beyond just learning and rehearsing the song
>>
>>129924722
I would say this process is not necessary for most players but I am specifically trying to emulate another musician in some context.
>>
>>129924722
This is for people with learning disabilities.

I literally never actually practice guitar. I've been playing since 8 and all i've ever done is noodle. I had a couple guitar lessons as a kid, was taught the chords and how to read tab and then I was like thats enough, I know all I need to know and stopped going and ever since i've just noodled.

I never even realised it until recently too, i've been playing for 20 years, very passionately and I could be a real solid professional but I just never gave a shit. My skill level could probaly be achieved in like a year or two by someone dedicated to learning. I learn a new thing every few years and then just play with whatever sounds good to me.

Anyone else like this?
I'm not that good, but I still play like every day, just making up my own little melodies

Get a nice folk guitar with nylon strings. This will make sure they don’t hurt their young hands, but they can still approximate real stuff.

The real lesson is that he looks up to you and emulates you, so keep up the drip feeding lessons. As he progresses, you can be like, “okay, now you can learn x because your hands and arms can reach it.”

The First Act guitars may sound like a shit proposition but they are short scale, cheap, and I know the basses have flat wounds. What you should REALLY teach him is how to put the guitar on the stand or in a case. Kids love rituals and you can see if the guitar has snot or scratches on it. Dont make a big deal about it, but tell him/her/xir that respecting your instrument is one crucial aspect of learning the craft.

I taught my neighborhood kids how to play instruments and they picked it up quick. They learned on guitar and piano, and my neighbor kid would bring his trombone to play rudimentary parts at like 9am on a Saturday morning.

Don’t let him down.

This is another cool guitar but it's not really the guitar itself, it's they Hyvibe computer preamp that is the cool part. You can actually order the HyVibe separately and get it installed into your own acoustic of your choice. It's just a surgery I wouldn't DIY for fear of completely fucking your guitar...

Good evening /gg/
Is there a buyer's guide for electric guitars? I am am looking for the most maximum budget guitar that doesn't compromise on being more guitar than toy - additionally I won't be able to use a traditional outlet powered amp as I will soon be on an indefinite road trip (homeless but with a car), and have my eye on a AA or USB rechargeable battery powered headphone guitar amp, like the Valeton Rushead Max - also open to suggestions there.
I don't know much of anything about musical instruments but I do like metal music, and have a lot of time on my hands now to learn.
>>
jesus fucking christ how many of you live in a car
>>
>>129926609
Now combine this with AI so you can just tell it to give you the tone of SRV or ZZ Top or whomever you like and it can instantly emulate their tone on the fly. But all the wizardry in the world won't help you with effects/tone/loops etc if you can't already play (pick or fingerpick). I think AI will somehow get baked into these gadgets eventually somehow. I'd bet on it.

Just get a pignose amp. It can be battery powered or plugged into an inverter in your car for traditional power. I'm assuming your outlet is North American? I actually have no idea if they make Pignose portable amps with Euro plugs. I suppose I could look that up...but so can you.

They're cool little amps. I have one. You can daisy chain the pignose to a bigger amp too for crazy distortion and sounds you just can't get otherwise.

Cool man. I wish you the best in your journey.

I posted earlier on that Cole Clark true hybrid. It is probably a bit out of budget to start with but maybe something to look towards in the future. Scroll up and find my post on it and watch the demo video. It's like a 2 in 1 guitar both acoustic and electric.

I mean it's one instrument that plays like an acoustic and is also electric so it's a 2 in 1 bang for the buck. I dunno. It gives you serious versatility and it takes up little room compared to two separate instruments. Just an idea.

Otherwise any Strat electric is a good bet. A Squire is the cheapest. Lots of guys on here can tell you more about them than I can. Coupled with some kind of effects processor that can be battery powered. Mine can, I just can't remember what it's called off the top of my head. Go on Aliexpress and see what kind of effects processors they have. The Pignose and a battery operated effects processor will give you crazy versatility combined with any guitar you choose and can afford. That's how I'd personally go. You have to think busker (street corner performer) like...but with minimal gear/space.
>>
i am guitar o'toole
>>
>>129926984
Oh and I can plug a headphone jack into my effects processor via a 2 in 1 headphone splitter and a guitar jack adapter. It's pretty nifty. This means I can be fully electric with an infinite amount of effects all via headphone jack or unplug that and into any amp I want.

So there are really 3 things to look at. 1) The guitar, 2) The amp 3) The effects processor. And any cables you would need to connect it all together.
