I genuinely believe that 90% of metal bands who go from all harsh vocals to incorporating clean singing have just run out of ideas and need a gimmick to appeal to a broader audience. That's not to say that there haven't been bands that actually expand on their artistic expression and do it well. There's a fair amount of bands that blend vocal styles and sound fine. But usually if it's not part of their sound from the beginning, it massively sucks when they cop out and try to show their "soft side." Picrel is a perfect example... everything up to 2022 was solid, but they've had longer and longer gaps between albums. And now this last one is basically half clean vocals with soft parts and it's so incredibly bland.

>>129926225my bad, I meant extreme metal bands (black metal, death metal, etc.)

>>129926237His voice is pretty raspy and he’s yelling. How is that “clean”?
>>129926217Dude, it gets tiresome to always scream, give the singers a break.
>>129926217i agree
>>129926217It worked for Katatonia
>>129928361it worked decently for Katatonia, Opeth (to some degree, they managed to sell out AFTER doing cleans for years), My Dying Bride and I guess Amorphisbut I do somewhat agree with OP that it's a stale gimmick to become more popular with the normies in a lot of cases
