Tonight's listen:Hasil Adkins - Out to HunchHasil Adkins: The original psychobilly, grandfather of lo-fi, king of the one-man bands. Supposedly he began recording songs in his rural West Virginia home in the mid-1950's after hearing Hank Williams' music on the radio and assuming he was simultaneously playing all the instruments himself. Over the ensuing decade he would create some of the most manic, deranged, uncommercial rock 'n' roll of his era. Out to Hunch presents 20 of his wildest tracks, three of which are about cutting his girlfriend's head off. Aside from a few which inexplicably made it onto singles in the early 60's, nearly all the songs here were previously unreleased. Adkins took the concept of rhyming lyrics as a mere suggestion, and often broke into weird spoken monologues mid-song. It could be argued that this music is lacking in variety, as every track is just the Haze hollering, whacking away on guitar, and keeping a basic drum beat. Some bass lines would be welcome, but a man only has so many limbs. The real draw here is hearing the unfettered energy and singular vision of a man high on hot-dog fumes. For those wishing to delve deeper into the insanity, Norton Records released two more collections of his early recordings: Peanut Butter Rock and Roll (more rockers) and Moon Over Madison (Hank-like country weepers so miserable they could only come from the mind of a manic depressive). Adkins died in 2005 from injuries sustained after being run over by an ATV. Naturally. 9.0/10https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9ALNptTxNU
