More compact.Better sound. Cheaper. Why does the music community shun CDs?
>>129938479Because CD is just a digital storage medium and we have better means of storing digital audio now like flash storage?>inb4 "blablabla not all CD audio was digital!"Yeah but who even gives a shit when there's functionally no difference? The reason Vinyl never died was because there is a real novelty to the sound being physically etched in wax and (theoretically) not even needing electricity to play back.

>>129938561CD rot only happens with very specific pressings or if you live in a very humid and hot area. As long as you keep them in their cases, your CDs are gonna be fine. I've bought many early 80s records on flea markets, and they still play perfectly.

>>129938561>CD rot - they often don't last more than 20 years without problemsi have some of the earliest pressings ever made. some are 40yrs old. also have 100s i bought throughout the 90s which are now 30+yrs old. never had a disc "rot" or experience a disc failure or any sort
>>129939723I have hundreds of used CDs and two examples of disc rot. Both are known bad pressings. One still plays perfectly because the rot starts from the edge and hasn't reached the data yet. The other has more data so the rot has reached the end of the final track.
>>129939723>>129939935I use Exact Audio Copy's Test mode to determine if certain CDs are fucked.Having bought a large amount from charity shops the past couple of years, unfortunately I've encountered quite a few more than usual. Some you can tell straight away because of how scratched the disc is. Others don't look fucked at all but still fail. The three weirdest defective ones I've experienced were a copy of Blood Sugar Sex Magik where the disc had a tiny hole going straight through the data, a copy of D12 World with a similar issue, and a copy of Take off Your Pants And Jacket where the data layer hadn't been pressed properly so you could see straight through it from the underside.
>>129939935>Both are known bad pressings.right collectors know that certain nimbus cds pressed in the uk have problems. they are easy to detect since the top label side become sticky but they are still playable. >>129939976those problems seem like problems caused when people store the cds in binders. the binders seem to destroy cds because of some sort of chemical reaction
>>129940034>those problems seem like problems caused when people store the cds in binders. the binders seem to destroy cds because of some sort of chemical reactionProbably. I've seen stories about the foam packaging Deutsche Grammophon releases had in the 80s which ended up bonding to the discs themselves, I'm very thankful I've never encountered that in person. The Blink-182 one was one of those Replay refurbishment CDs which made it really odd that it got through their process (this obviously isn't a picture of it but the resealing was similar)
>>129939976>a tiny hole going straight through the data"Pin holes". Very common in early CDs. Consensus among the boomers on the Steve Hoffman forums is that it's a manufacturing defect there from the start and it doesn't get any worse with time. I've never seen an example bad enough to seriously trouble the error correction.
>>129940167These weren't pin holes. The top layer was worn away. If I had the two I would take a photo of them but I threw them out.>I've never seen an example bad enough to seriously trouble the error correction. The two were unplayable.
>>129939047Poorfags who shill streaming and pirating do just make stuff up. Vinylfags in many cases have just been misinformed. Both in rationalization trap. Vinylfags sinking thousands into crusty worn-out records that crackle and pop and skip and pretending it sounds better or "warmer".

Why do you pay for digital files on plastic discs?
>>129944797why do you have a micropenis?
I was a teenager in the CD era and records were corny gay shit that sucked. Nobody wanted vinyl, it was all about CD's. instantly changing tracks, able to play in car, perfect sound. Records are fine I guess, just obsolete funco pops for consumerists. What's worse is the 'audio cassette' thing. I remember mid 2000's the zoomer punk bands were putting out audio cassettes, what the fuck? burning CD's is cheap as fuck. Tapes sound like shit.
>>129940056>The Blink-182 one was one of those Replay refurbishment CDsright, that is another thing that destroys cds... buffing/refurbishing. that process literally grinds away plastic on the disc. granted its on the bottom layer and the data is on the top but i never bother with buffed discs. i had one long ago before i became aware of the process and it had playing issues at a certain point on the disc. sure enough after looking at the disc under bright light i could see it was buffed
>>129944797How else do you get digital files? Paying monthly? You really want your entire music collection relegated to a temporary subscription that can change or be wiped at any time? Streaming isn’t like the library where at least it’s free. You’re actually paying to be fucked in the ass.

>>129944974>I was a teenager in the CD eraI remember when CDs really became a thing and how much better it was. We were a bit late, probably late 80s. I have great memories playing my dad's records and making cassettes. I still probably bought cassettes into the 90s just because they were cheaper. Most teenagers had a mix of CDs and cassettes, and making mixes or just dubbing other people's CDs or cassettes or even from the library, was how you got music. Internet and cheap writable CDs ended cassettes but something culturally was lost (certainly not in the sound though, cassettes were good enough but sucked). Then again the early days of Internet music sharing was good fun too.
>>129944974Cassette tapes are legit awful and only done by the "OMG so quirky obsolete technology release UwU" gimmick releases, might as well just put shit on Reel to Reel atp. I have doubts about Spotify lossless but say it is, they usually have one of the recent remasters. You could have that same master on cd but that isn't necessary the case. Many CDs have unique masters not found on streaming sites. They may share these masters with vinyl or not. What they don't share with vinyl is shity sound. Also certain pressings of masters have different sound characteristics.

>>129948094By the way even though I collect CDs I also have an Apple Music account. I download music from there in ALAC format and convert it to FLAC. A lot of music is not released on any physical format these days. Lossless streaming is 16bit 44.1khz at the minimum, the same as a CD. If being able to keep it is what you care about there are tools you can set up to download from streaming services. I have a massive archive of lossless audio, mostly CD rips but I don't want to limit myself to just that.
no matter what you cd fags say, spotify has the highest audible audio quality possible. twist it as much as you want, your plastic collection has no advantage over my spotify account/ FLAC collection. and sitting myself in my cold cellar with my vinyl collection on a hot summer's say is infinitely more sovlful and purposeful than your soulless plastic hifi setup.

>>129947540>SACDs are the way to go.based. Vinyl and steaming fags can't compete
>>129949022I download entire discographies in FLAC. I build my collection using my own criteria for what is the best. If needed I read stevehoffman forums or RED comments. If no relevant information is available I choose the earliest versions of albums on CDs that are the most complete. Preference for releases with Japanese bonus tracks and things like that. If the versions I want are missing sometimes I just buy the CD myself to rip and upload to private trackers. I share everything I get on Soulseek too.
>>129947540>>129949049Depends on the mastering for the specific SACD. It's a case by case basis. Also if you're not playing it back on actual DSD equipment it is a good idea to use a proper filter for your PCM conversion:http://s-audio.systems/dsd-filter/?i=2

More pertinent question: are people really nostalgic for physical media, or are they just nostalgic for the time before streaming?
>>129949518Well I don't think there is conclusive proof either way. But the presentation does seem to be constructed to appeal to modern sensibilities don't you think? >>129949755Consider that I never really fully moved on to streaming in the first place and kept pirating.
