How can you never hear about music from this whole continent? All of it sucks? Can they make good music?

I admit I don't know much about sub Saharan music. I know Steve Hofmeyr and Die Antwoord from South Africa but I wouldn't call their music distinctly African.

Start here. Paul Simon is American, of course, but he collaborates with a ton of South African musicians on this. Those collaborators, and this album’s influences, give you plenty of places to go next.

Check out Sahel sounds on YouTube. The Touareg people are known for being excellent guitar players.

>Can they make good music?
they used to make great - and diverse - music.
Now, it is absolute shit - just derivative of American hip-hop, even using the same stupid gangsta terms.

all creativity and imagination erased
truly fucking tragic and pathetic

would like to know who's behind this

If you're going to check out African music, it is ESSENTIAL you dig 70s through 90s Ethiopian pop funk. It was huge in the country. I did a deep dive last year and it was incredibly rewarding. The crown jewel is Roha Band, especially when Neway Debebe is on the microphone. They're like the Sly and Robbie of Ethiopia but with with more members that came and went. The band is still around today, albeit with none of the original members.

There are a ton of videos like this tucked in dusty little corners of YouTube where old Ethiopians are pining for the good old days huddled around the TV waiting for Roha band to come on. A universal kind of nostalgia, I think.
Here's my favorite track they cut way back when.

Louis Potgieter (yes, the Moskau guy) had a decent solo track, though it's more French inspired.
