Everyone says this is the best black metal album but I think its boring
You don't. They're riffless carnivalslop symphoshit. The people who think Emperor are a great band are 50 year olds who only had 5 black metal CDs available to them to purchase in 1996 and have never listened to anything but Emperor and Immortal
>>129956724kek what do you consider good black metal? Atmoshit like burzum or awfully produced shit like mayhem?
>>129956758
No one who listens to black metal thinks emperor is the best anything
>>129956651>Everyone says this is the best black metal albumIf they haven't heard Storm of the Light's Bane, that is.
>>129956651It does suck. I put off listening to more black metal for years because this was one of the first BM albums I listened to. Unfortunately a lot of le classic metal is really boring
>>129956816melodeath slop
Highkey my fave BM record even if I'm more of a DM guy. I just love how epic and all-encompassing it sounds. Makes the middle of summer feel like the dead of winter. I can understand it being a tough sell to some tho due to the symphonic nature being pretty different from a lot of the more lo-fi and chaotic early BM (fwiw I think Burzum and Dissection are overrated. Prefer Ulver and Bathory)
>>129956651Look up some of their live footage. I didn't care much for Anthems for the longest time but the live versions of the songs made me appreciate the guitar work far more
>>129956651Listen to the earlier material before the debut album when Mortiis was still in the band. They got too pretentious and symphonic when there was no one left to check that nerd Ihsahn.
>>129956816Dissection isn't really even black metal
>>129956724Trvke
>>129956724fpwp. Leaking from a very dumb general.>>129956775I like both.
Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is peak
>>129956651Its just a bunch of cheesy noise played by 16 year olds
>>129956651OK? Go listen to some Cryptopsy or Slayer or whatever. Black metal isn't mosh pit music, it's not "check out this sick riff" music, it's extreme metal that incorporates elements of traditional European music. It's a music with a history and concept, not some vague feeling. Black metal was created as a rebellion against the Billabong, basketball shorts-wearing American slob death metal bands. As for the album, it's immature because it several of the songs were written when the musicians were 15 or so. Anthems and Nemesis Divina are both more mature music.>>129956724Go listen to some chugslop. I hear guys like you every time I go to Guitar Center. CHUGA-CHUGA-CHUGA-SQUEEEEAL over and over for hours, like a baby sucking a pacifier. This is why people think metal is retarded.
Ihsahn is a pretentious prick. This album is babby’s first BM album. You can find much better
>>129956651ITNE is one of those classic BM albums it took me ages to get into but when it clicked I really liked it. Same with DMDS. Hated them both at first and preferred shit like Burzum, Darkthrone and the first Gorgoroth albums.
It's fuKKKing shit and Fenriz himself can tell you (he's said several times he's only been able to listen to mere seconds of that shit album before turning it off). Whoever goes as far as to say it's "the best bm album" is 100% a söygroid.
>>129963468You don't know more about bm than Fenriz, and he's called out FAGGOT emperor for being plastic SHIT and NOT bm in the past. If you're gonna appeal to the genre's core values, emperor is NOT the band to do so, and you'd know if you weren't an entry-level tard.
>>129963532>babby’s first BM albumOK and
>>129956651It was never my favourite BM album but Cosmic Keys is a great song. In the symphonic sphere I was a much bigger fan of Anorexia Nervosa.
>>129963761>>129963768Fenriz is a poser and should not be taken seriously
>>129963768Fenriz is a complete goofball and a grumpy old man. He has a fetish for low-skill, poorly-recorded music and (to the extent that it's important here) very poor musicianship. Any true BM fan would know this.>>129963532Ihsahn is actually one of the few nice guys in the scene. He comes off as a soft-spoken family man in interviews. He barely even criticizes other bands.>>129963712DMDS is more famous for its backstory than its music. New Mayhem has more to offer musically. "Those of the Unlight" by Marduk came out a year before and is better in almost every way.
For me it's Enslaved, both their classic and prog eraThey are one of the only Norwegian BM bands free of any controversy
>>129963905>EnslavedBased. I don't even like BM that much but I love Enslaved, same for DM or prog, I don't like it but I love Opeth
>>129963905Enslaved is about 1/3 solid, 1/3 great and 1/3 boring. Looking for bands with no controversy is a sad criteria.>>129963927Opeth has never been associated with BM, despite their first 2 albums sounding BM during the heavier parts. Morningrise is a great, contemplative album, but is generally their most hated album (with the possible exception of their new stuff which I don't even bother with).
>>129963789>Fenriz is a poser and should not be taken seriouslyHis band's the most important bm band ever, maybe only tied for the title with Mayhem. If you don't acknowledge him, you don't like bm.>>129963871>Fenriz is a complete goofball and a grumpy old man.Strawman; irrelevant.>He has a fetish forHe's keeping the ORIGINAL bm intent alive. That's why their new shit doesn't sound like their albums EVERY FUKKKING POSER EVER has copied since, because it's NOT about that, and it was NEVER about that. Any true bm fan would know this.
>>129964616>most important bm band everThat's not Bathory
>>129956651Flipgror?
>>129964616>the most important bm band everI like Darkthrone but wouldn't go that far, their music was always highly derivative of older bands and Fenriz would be the first to admit that
>>129963871>DMDS is more famous for its backstory than its music.True, but when it clicked it really clicked. Buried By Time and Dust for example. >New Mayhem has more to offer musicallyAlso true, I liked Wolf's Lair Abyss immediately and it remains my favourite Mayhem, like DMDS on steroids with an angry retard screeching all over it. >"Those of the Unlight" by Marduk came out a year before and is better in almost every way.Again true, great album though I think they peaked on Opus Nocturne.
>>129963963>Looking for bands with no controversy is a sad criteriaWell they were probably the most normal band in the scene besides Ulver
>>129963963Morningrise is really back loaded in my opinion, the epic Black Rose Immortal and the ballad To Bid You Farewell really carry the album but I find the first 3 tracks quite forgettable.
What do you think about Ihsahn's solo work? I really like this album and Eremita but haven't listened to the rest much
>>129965751After is definitely his standout solo work, up there with the best of his Emperor stuff imo My other top picks would be Das Seelenbrechen, Eremita and the s/t. The only album I didn't care too much for was Arktis which has one or two really great tracks and the rest is pretty middling
>>129966038Arktis is pretty forgettable besides the track with the Leprous guyhttps://youtu.be/6AhLas3CtLQ?is=Hbbd0RXDKHIGyUlA
>>129956651>Everyone says this is the best black metal albumI don't think everyone says that>but I think its boringwell you're just wrong
>>129966146Pretty much, that and Until I Too Dissolve are the only ones I really come back to
>>129963963>despite their first 2 albums sounding BM during the heavier parts.there's a black metal influence up through blackwater park
>>129956724dont agree, im hearing riffs for sure.and theres nothing wrong with synths in metal, you can just chose to listen to something else.found this really enjoyable synth/blackmetal track the other day, very somberhttps://youtu.be/JNqGgIOy8coalso dude i love this synth metalstyle of music posting some https://youtu.be/UNYIcGvKCt8https://youtu.be/peiqwNPYrZ0
>>129956651only good black metal bands are sargeist, abigor and akhlys
>>129967417>akhlysSlop tier
>>129964616>His band's the most important bm band everNope.>>129964616>If you don't acknowledge him, you don't like bm.Absolute slave mentality. You are either 14 or pathetic.>>129965738>but I find the first 3 tracks quite forgettable."The Night and the Silent Water" is the most emotionally relevant song they've ever written. It was about his grandfather's (who raised him) death. Akerfeldt couldn't play it live for about a decade after it was released. I think all the tracks are pretty strong, if meandering, even "Nectar".>>129965751Good for 3-4 albums. I think he has just aged to a point where I don't find his new music relatable. Maybe in 20 years I'll appreciate it more.
>>129967417>abigorBased, Apokalypse is probably the ultimate bm record in my eyes
