I'm looking for music that is similar to black metal but isn't metal. The closest I found are some Mount Eerie records and dungeon synth. I'm not a big fan of DS but I like the early Mortiis stuff and the prison Burzum records are ok/good. I know neofolk has a lot of black metal fans but I don't like that stuff. I'm seeing Rome next weekend, so maybe his live performance will change my mind.I figured the closest I could get is something like shoegaze. I do like shoegaze but I never quite got the same vibe unless I delved into blackgaze stuff.I like that black metal can most consistently able to transport the listener without relying on lyrics. I'm not sure if other genres can really do it. I also like that albums generally feel pretty hefty too. I'm open to any recs. I don't have anything to do, so I'll try to listen to them all. Sorry if this is a dumb request, I'm not even sure if what I'm looking for exists. I'd like to eventually listen to stuff that's not neckbeard-tier so here I am.Here are some BM records I like:Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar OssEmperor - In the Nightside EclipseForteresse - Métal Noir QuébécoisHate Forest - SorrowMoonblood - Taste Our German Steel!Panopticon - CollapseSepultura - Morbid VisionsSpectral Wound - Songs of Blood and MireUlver - BergtattWolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters
>>129959690Alright, I have something for you if you're open to something completely outside the usual pipeline.Alexander Scriabin's Vers la flamme, especially the Vladimir Sofronitsky recording.>sombre, almost static intro that gradually builds into something intense and overwhelming>extremely atmospheric and "textural">constant tremolos later on that feel weirdly close to tremolo picking in black metal, just translated into piano language>old recording with a slightly degraded, lo-fi feel that actually enhances the atmosphere>apocalyptic end-of-the-world program, aesthetically dark, spiritually basically metalScriabin is probably the closest classical gets to black metal in terms of atmosphere and intensity, even if the sound itself is obviously completely different.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xka1fq_42fo
>>129959690Ambient folk group old saw, their sound is cold. Dark folk like Empyrium's third album
>>129959690Just listento industrial

>>129963778Jesus, how do you even begin to play something like that?
Post-Punk, goth stuff, dead Kennedys, tsol, Type O Negative
>>129963880>black mealThe correct term is soul food
>>129959690Check out Power Electronics, things like Genocide Organ or Grunt:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oqxZvUGXe4&thttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSZaMoe8sgI
>>129959690>>129965451Or maybe look into real Industrial, not faux-Industrial like NIN or Ministry:Maschinenzimmer 412https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Fuhvsb4G1Ehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iVdFK32s7UTrepaneringsritualen:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkKGfik-M8kOr go for the more atmospheric, Ambient side of things with Cryo Chamber Records stuff:Dead Melodies:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmR-uQbz92gDark Ambient, Lustmord:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCSg_P6uZwIHave fun discovering!
OP here, I am stupid and ended up playing video games until 2am like an idiot. I'm catching up with the recs right now.>>129963778I found a CD rip on soulseek from 1998. Good catch on classical. Giving it a listen now. I had the same thought some years ago about classical being the closest but I find it a bit hard to get into. I might try to get into some of the classic romantic symphonies. >>129963829Any recs on old saw? What's the difference between "dark folk" and neofolk? >>129963833Any recs? I don't really like what I've heard from industrial/black metal, but Thorns is ok I guess. Should I start with NIN?>>129963890I've never actually listened to surf rock but it seemed like a sillier genre to me. Yes, the riffs are similar but it doesn't hit the same emotional and philosophical tropes that a lot of BM has.>>129965073Similarly, DK and TSOL miss the mark. I liked DK a lot in high school and caught TSOL live once. Never messed with TON. I do think a lot of metalcore and "neocrust" stuff gets close, but that's kind of cheating since they are basically metal. Maybe there's some post hardcore that scratches the itch?
I like your taste OP. Although it's a tough ask, maybe some more melodic Drone/Noise stuff might do the trick?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Fa-vLkj1Fo
