Tonight's listen:Creedence Clearwater Revival - Live at WoodstockBeloved by hippies and chuds alike, CCR's appearance at Woodstock was almost inevitable. The Californian swamp larpers were at the peak of their powers in mid-1969 with several major hits under their belt and more soon to come. They were always a solid live act, and their Woodstock performance is no exception. Pretty good recording quality too. While the whole show is strong, it's on the final two songs that things really start choogling. This pair of ten-minute workouts absolutely cooks, and this comes from someone who habitually grumbles about protracted live versions of songs. >>129987927The recording quality is in that sweet spot where it's really full bodied and crisp but retaining a rawer, lower-fi edge that perfectly suits CCR's aesthetic. Their other live albums are more clean sounding and lack some of that oomph.

Talking about Creedence is tricky because everyone wants to believe that it was John Fogerty's singular genius carrying dead weight, but you also don't want to seem like you're making too many excuses for the greedy ungrateful assholes that some of those guys turned out to be (mostly just Stu). But man, they are so fucking underrated as a band, not just vehicles for great songs. Stu and Doug were an incredibly tight and ripping rhythm section and even John would be the first to tell you that Tom's rhythm guitar was the cornerstone of their sound. >>129991961I'm a big Scott Walker fan but I do think the Brothers are underrated these days. It's common for some of his snobbier fans who came to him primarily through his later avant garde stuff to just ignore everything before Scott 3 at the earliest, but there's a very clear line of continuity and evolution from the Walker Bros to Scott's solo work.
