Tonight's listen:

Big Daddy - Sgt. Pepper's

Big Daddy's entire schtick was taking then-contemporary hits by the likes of Prince, Michael Jackson, and Bruce Springsteen, and redoing them in the style of 50's rock 'n' roll. In 1992 they decided to tackle the entirety of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, with each song imitating the sound of a different singer. For the most part the results are cute if nothing else. You get the title track done Coasters-style, "Lucy in the Sky" a la Jerry Lee Lewis, "Fixing a Hole" like Dion, and so on. While the majority of these imitations are on the limp side, one stands out as fairly impressive: "A Day in the Life" in Buddy Holly's style, incorporating motifs from several of his songs and concluding with a motherfucking plane crash. Still, the album's appeal is basically limited to Beatles fans who know enough about 50's oldies to recognize a pastiche of Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon or Billy Ward and his Dominoes. If that sounds like you, it's fun for a couple spins.

Amusing concept but it feels like cheating to model each track on a specific song, like Fixing A Hole just being The Wanderer
