What happened to Tom Wilson? He produced some great stuff -Sun Ra, 3 albums and Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan (along with 4 Freewheelin songs), Simon and Garfunkel's Debut, Freak Out and The Velvet Underground And Nico along with other stuff but after that he just sort of faded before dying young in the 70s. There's no real explanation of why Bob fired him and he just sort of stopped. Was he black balled by the industry for some reason?
>>129994453I was so surprised to learn he was black
>>129994453I think Bob, when he really started working with a band in mid-'65, found Wilson to be rather dry and inattentive. There are hints of tension on the session tapes from around this time. While the initial HWY61 attempts did deliver Rolling Stone, it was the first time Dylan really banged his head against a song, and notably the only (?) track from that era where the final take isn't the album/single master. With arrangements now way beyond just guitar and harmonica, this is also where Dylan starts to work hard on ironing his songs out, sometimes for hours if not days on end, often past midnight, which apparently wasn't Wilson's preferred approach.I think they just reached the end of the road. Dylan's decision to switch things up certainly yielded some of the best music of his career, but in later interviews he's always given Wilson his proper due.
>>129994480no need to be surprised.
