Do you know of an mp3 player that can play songs from a directory based on metadata? Like if I have a few dozen in a directory, can I somehow tell the player, 'play the songs that have This Guy listed as an artist?'

too broke for Spotify? because it can literally do that, not with your mp3s but with your in-app library

Can't Windows Media player do this? Like can't you just put all those songs into a playlist and from there just filter them by artist? Pretty sure most media players that can handle playlists can do this.

Mediamonkey could do this I believe. Just go to the directory. Then open a column sorter, or whatever its called, itll list all the albums/artists. Select the artist. Then itll only display songs from that artist.

I use my P2P software to download music. The files are downloaded into a folder. I use media monkey to navigate to that folder, before I move them to my music folder.

You can see those columns at the top: Artist/Album/Genre. You could click one of those to filter by that particular category.

Hope I understood your question correctly and this helps

Right now I can browse and filter my Library by Album/Artist/Genre. But you can see the other options Mediamonkey offers as well.

You can also set up Playlists with defined rules. It's pretty flexible

What are you trying to do exactly

you can use 'smart playlist' in itunes to select from your files based on all sorts of factors (length, artist, anything at all really, etc)
