Lately, I've been coming across a handful of instances of games that you would not think, at all, would have some really good, and hardhitting tracks. This game for example has a lot of ambient DnB tracks, that if I hadn't told you this was from a Looney Tunes game, you wouldn't have even guessed. Would like to see more if anyone has anything that comes to mind.

Probably the most batshit insane example of unexpectedly good music in a "video game" OST
This plays in a fucking porn scene of an obscure 20 year old visual novel, but sounds like genuinely good 90s/early 2000s alt rock, doesn't even sound Japanese.

I love d&b vidya soundtracks, they seem to crop up in the most unlikely places

Stewart Copeland made the soundtracks for some of the Spyro the Dragon games and they're bangers
he randomly put this up a few weeks ago

A ZX spectrum game would be the last place where you'd expect to find good music, and technically this isn't *from* the game... it's just that these games came on cassette tapes (yes really) and sometimes they'd have music on the B-side.

Always thought this song went hard

Visual novels usually tend to have good OSTs even if they are slightly ambitious about their work. I enjoy the hell out of Uminekos and Higurashis OST almost daily. This is pretty solid too.

Really cool track. Dude didn't need to go this hard for a Pictionary game, yet he did.

>>130032923
Excellent example, and agreed. This type of stuff scratches an itch you didn't know you have, and seeing how far artists will go to make energetic, engaging, and listenable songs in niche places.

Seeing musicians that come from big fame do work for video games always fascinates me. Really cool he is still passionate about it to this day.

Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo also worked on Crash Bandicoot 1-3

A game called Neuromancer based on some old sc-fi novel had a good midi cover of a Devo song called "Some things never change"

And of course the masterpiece that is the Robocop gameboy menu theme (RIP Scott Adams)

cyberpunk/gibson fans in shambles.
the DEVO cover was a huge part of the advertising for the computer game, they're even mentioned on the front cover of the game itself

It's funny that they though Devo wold be a big selling point when they were in they're worst era LOL

It might sound a little counterintuitive at first glance, but it's so much more common to find worthwhile soundtracks in mediocre-to-bad games than in good ones. The reason why is that's the circumstance in which you can get artists loose to do whatever they want, not being held to account on whether what they are doing is adequately reified to the game's theme and/or not alienating to any of an audience that will most definitely be there to play it.

My favorite game soundtrack ever is Evergrace's. It has an interesting history of being outright mocked by its contemporary audience, only for attention to be brought to it much later by people who don't care the least for the game. I myself confess that I have tried to play and beat it at least 10 times at this point and I always give up on it because it's just that bad. But I have never found anything else that sounds quite like it.

Does picrel count? It's not a bad or outrageous game, but the circumstances of its obscurity have made people unaware of how awesome it is in terms of music, unapologetic early 10's EDM with DJ Shadow, Elite Force (who was part of Lunatic Calm) and Noisia.

Not really that unexpected, C-64 games had some of the best music in their time, as it was one of the few computers that had an actual synthesizer inside of it instead of just a buzzer. Some of the best game composers of all time worked on C-64.
