>Yeah, it's wicked hard to make a living in music... Guess what? It always was.
>>
>>130042458
How did his vlogs manage to actually sound like they were coming from an adult, meanwhile video essayists who are in some cases even older than he was at the time just sound like manchildren?
>>
>>130042525
He's got a patina on him
>>
>>130042525
he had an incredibly immature worldview actually.
>>
>>130042797
Even if thats the case he has every moron discussing music on youtube now beat in that regard so my question still stands
>>
housing was cheaper and the state provided better welfare, it might not be "making a living" but it was easier for musicians to at least be able to survive while not having to work. also touring these days is basically a net negative
>>
>>130042525
he's more talented than everyone else in regards to having opinions on popular and underground music
>>
retarded niger
its a million times worse now
>>
I miss him bros
Disintegration and SoaLW podcast when?
>>
>>130044559
He said this in like 2012
>>
>>130044619
Unlikely given the fallout after his comments about numero group.
>>
>>130043796
Housing was cheaper because the minimum wage was $7

Anyone know the Killing Joke song that appears in 8:15?

>>
>>130047192
Thanks :)
>>
>>130042797
What was his worldview?
>>
>>130042525
Mainly because he's had some relevant life experience. Comparing a bunch of dudes who have done nothing but listen to music digitally and whine on twitter to a guy who was in bands, had an indie record deal, worked for radio stations, threw parties and disc jokey'd, was part of a legitimate music publication that sent its journos out to shows back when it was still independent enough to trash artists in public, did actual research that involved tracking people down and unearthing pieces of media...etc makes it clear as day. And if this sounds like i'm ''glazing'' the guy, you have to realize that he's not that special in the grander scheme of things ; there were thousands of people like him from his generation. Any of random indie scene alumni that get interviewed on Vish's Kreative Kontrol podcast have 1000x more of a clue about music than any of these tryhard ''video essayists'' who a) have never even read a single book about the subject, and b) have never even watched an actual video essay that predated the youtube age (like an F for Fake, for example). It wouldn't be an issue if it hadn't become the main gateway for fans to learn more about what they're listening to.
There's people who know what they're talking about, and there are people who don't know jack shit. That's it, really.
>>
>>130045436
What did he say? I missed the drama but I'm curious to know because I've got an aversion to Numero Group's re-releases
>>
>>130042458
I don't know man, I always remember that one post by a random boomer saying he was getting $250 a show for playing random bars back in the 70s or 80s or something, split four ways. For two shows a weekend, that's roughly the average weekly salary back then.
>>
>>130047615
why do you blame the shitskins and not the companies that hire them?
>>
>>130047460
He just went off about the ahistorical nature of Numero making bands like Duster seem as important as other bands from their era when it's actually just a few loud fans online and nobody heard that band at the time.
>>
>>130044619
never probably, Chris likes to quit when things are gaining momentum, he gets real paranoid about people attempting to take him out
>>
>>130047928
who fucking cares though? they put out records for people who want to hear them, why does it matter if he personally doesn't like them?
>>
>>130047460
He referred to them as goyslop, which is a bit generous because It's worse than that.
>>
>>130047439
this pretty much, he simply was there. I'm probably 15 years younger than him if I had to guess so I found all this indie bullshit on lastfm when I was a teenager. His videos were neat to me just because I felt like I was getting some insight from someone who was actively paying attention to all this shit while it was coming out, plus he'd occasionally name drop an album/band I'd never heard of. I disagree with some of his takes for sure although I will lend him some respect for being there when I wasn't, but I am down to listen to his grumpy old ass rant about music. He seems like the right kind of music dork too where a lot of people I know are way too centered around specific scenes/cultures

>If anyone asks you if you've heard of a band or heard a record, I mean, just delete that person from your life. When people ask me that, I invariably say no, whatever the case may be. And if they start to recommend it to me, I tell them it doesn't really sound like my kind of thing. Their discomfort and disappointment in not being able to use music in a way they should not be using it is a wonderful feeling.
>>
>>130048629
that's just the typical kind of trollpost you'd find on forums back in the day. we've all done this.
>>
Isn't he like a car mechanic or some shit?
>>
>>130048629
when did he ever say this
>>
>>130047460
Called it goyslop on a now deleted Matthew perpetua podcast
>>
>>130047966
It matters if you care about getting an actual understanding of what happened historically
>>
>>130050008
In one of the COVID streams. He's talking about people that use music as social currency
>>
>>130048629
Does he think he's John Cusack from that movie with jack black?
>>
>>130050603
yeah i mean i get the sentiment but that has to be some insane paraphrasing lol. If anybody's ever asked you if you've heard of an album remove that person from your life? lmao. This dude loves to yap about music. He's gotta just be talking about when people are acting pretentious or condescending about taste, in which case I agree, quickest route to the end of that convo
>>
>>130048629
absolute retardation
>>
>>130050730

>asphalt dust, car pollution grease and alcoholism sweats is now called "patina"
the absolute state of gen-x hipsters.....
>>
>>130045616
In most states it still is and $7 in 90s money is equivalent to like $16 today
>>
>>130051286
"uses music in a competitive way" is actually by definition pretentious
>>
>>130051648
>uhm akshually
there is nothing competitive or pretentious in sharing recs between friends, only autists such as Ott and yourself interpret it in that way.
>>
>>130051453
For less than the cost of a Big Mac, fries and a Coke, you can buy a loaf of fresh bread and some good cheese or roast beef, which you will enjoy much more
>>
>>130051772
He's not talking about that Jesus have you ever been in a social environment in your life. He's talking about people that lead with their impeachable music knowledge to intimidate and "win" social interactions
>>
>>130050600
if you don't like the records don't fucking buy them. it's a record company not a historical record.
>>
>>130052467
These things mattered to people, but you wouldn't understand that zoomer
>>
>>130051286
well, if being competitive about music doesn't fall under pretentious or condescending to you, then I'll add competitive to my list. If somebody's off the bat being competitive about music taste, that is also a scenario that I'd just try to end as quickly as possible. I'm not going to get any meaningful discussion about music out of a person who's just trying to out-hip me, so I agree with him there.
That said,
1.) I haven't seen anybody act that way IRL since I was like 20 and
2.) it has absolutely nothing to do with what he was asked in that AMA lmao
>>
>>130052481
you have no argument. literally just throwing a bitchfit because a company pressed records you don't like.
>>
>>130052189
i know Ott better than you, pitchfork's entire brand was built on being a smug cunt in the manner he shows right there, and he ends the post like a bitter crank, giving absolutely nothing insightful to a guy that asked him a simple question.

he could have just ended it with the second sentence but he didn't, and it's not a coincidence.
>>
>>130052483
>1.) I haven't seen anybody act that way IRL since I was like 20 and
exactly, and Ott never grew out of that edgy hipster phase, that's why this advice sounds like a joke to anyone over 20, who the fuck hangs out with people who flex their taste on you like they're high schoolers? ridiculous
>>
i need a list of his vids and reviews/articles of music. help please
>>
>>130053447
That's impossible I know more about him than I know about myself at this point to the extent that I got hired at the same place he works at to creep on his slack messages
>>
>>130050598
>Matthew perpetua
Now that guy is a hack. One of the many who was making disingenuous "heh, you didn't know this is how the music industry works?" posts about geese the other week.
>>
>>130053765
there's a torrent linked somewhere on his subreddit that should have most/all of the vids
there's an RYM "list" or whatever of a bunch of his old reviews

Ott needs to apologize for the part he played in gaslighting millions of people into thinking Animal Collective were actually good.

Those of us who survived the landfill indie wars realize Ott did not act alone in executing this dastardly plot against the global record-buying public. Obviously his co-conspirators at Pitchfork have plenty of blood on their hands too. But Ott must shoulder his share of the blame for the countless lives shattered by AnCo's loathsome music. Only then can we truly begin to heal.
>>
>>130051772
as a lifelong /mu/tant i actually agree with you to degree that there isnt anything wrong with being competitive with music taste as long as you go about it in a friendly and encouraging way that gets people deeper into music but the problem with that is that there are a lot of narrowminded smug faggots out there who think they've got it all figured out but under scrutiny aren't actually as sophisticated or knowledgeable in their taste as they think they are. i have friends like this irl and i don't even bother trying to share music with them anymore despite them constantly giving me recs because they aren't open and receptive to new things like i am and its generally a complete waste of time trying to get them to appreciate things that actually mean something to me. also take the /mu/ boyband poster for example, if i knew that person irl id probably delete him out of my life no questions asked, there is nothing worse than an unfunny insecure obsessive faggot who goes for low hanging fruit trolling to try and make himself seem more sophisticated and interesting to all of his anonymous friends online.

>>130053447
it is ironic that chris feels that way considering pitchfork built a brand on being smug elitists but people grow up and change and maybe he realized that its just not the way though id argue pitchfork was a necessary evil at the time and helped foster a thriving scene for underground artists to get the spotlight who otherwise would have gone on completely unnoticed

I'm amazed that this fucking guy managed to have the most succinct summary of the junkie state of mind in his Cobain video. The bit about them wanting to maintain their own secret misery more than anything is some top tier lucid observation.
>>
>>130054216
yeah sometimes he's right but sometimes he just says retarded shit in a smug "hehe i know best" tone.
>>
spotify and the price of touring made it much harder
>>
>>130054243
I'd expect nothing less from one of the founders of Pitchfork kek. I just don't take some of his tryhard stances that seriously, especially when he gets very dismissive. But when he's enthusiastic about something it's great.

half the time i think he's just talking shit for the sake of bantz or to subvert your expectations. i don't think the point is to take every word he says as the gospel but to have a compelling conversation which he is exceptionally good at

>>
>>130052507
weird you assume I don't like Duster
>>
>>130048629
It's so odd to me that people took this quote on face value and not a reasonable take. If you're a rational thinking real person you know when people are trying to one up you with their music taste. You should just not even bother with those people as Ott says. In his profession at a point I'm sure he was just inundated with people trying to out-taste him. If you saw that quote and got upset, you are likely that person or just an autistic retard who can't infer anything and just take life super literally. Must be difficult to function, feel sorry for you.
