Driver 23/The Atlas Moth is a 2-part documentary released in 1999 and 2001 about the failed Minneapolis band Dark Horse, and the process behind the creation of their 2000 album 'Guts Before Glory.' Lead singer Dan Cleveland recorded and mixed the entire album in at his house while taking psychiatric drugs for severe OCD and working a day-job as a delivery driver (#23) for an office supply company.

Among other issues, Cleveland got divorced during the production process, and also went bankrupt, along with the band's bass player Sean Cassidy (who died of a heart attack in 2004). Here's a track from the album for anyone curious:

>>130046146
Yeah even if you don't like Metallica its extfremely funny and should be considered essential viewing, watching a bunch of washed up 40-something millionaire manchildren hiring a therapist because they have 0 communication skills is too kino.
>>
>>130051668
all true but
>washed up
washed up implies that you can no longer attain the glory you used to have and metallica have only continued to play larger and larger arenas as they've gotten older. they've been setting attendance records at various places the past couple years.

a band that is washed up would be megadeth. they used to be able to headline tours on their own but as recently as the 2020s were only the penultimate band.

>>130055037
that scene was tough to watch. i actually really commiserated with dave. to have what you thought your best/only friends in the world just discard you like trash without a second chance...that's rough. not saying dave has problems himself but still.
>>
>The Filth and The Fury

People can say what they like about the Sex Pistols but most people don't really know the full story and the full story is perhaps the single most epic tale in the history of popular music

>Country is fucked/dying
>Music is shit
>Three lads with absolutely zero life prospects form band to shag women
>Ask owner of fashionable shop to manage the band
>Somehow recruit one of the most unique characterful people as singer (who also had zero prospects)
>Make music just for the fuck of it
>Its starts an entire new music scene
>It totally revolutionises music
>It entirely reshapes the fabric of society
>Split up within a year and a half

Feels like a thing that should be in private, granted in humanizes what happened more and probably got his message out there a bit. Its just weird because its not the usual "oh heres Dave being butthurt about Metallica again lol" and instead "heres a deeply wounded and sad Dave bearing his trauma about Metallica" and I didnt expect to see him be that open and honest in a giant doc.

You might, they intentionally showcase some of the most fried or obnoxious fans just because it's funny, so that could be entertaining. Directed by Todd Phillips so that's kind of interesting too.
At the very least, it gives a better perspective on the band than what the general public tends to assume because of the scene/fans. They're really just some dorky new england goofballs and nothing like the white dreaded hacky sack patchwork hippies that follow them.
Also if you're just interested in music history, they were one of the biggest touring acts of the 90s no question, this fact often seems downplayed because of how hated by the media they were, but they were a straight up cultural phenomenon in the 90s. Worth getting some exposure to that world for the sake of music culture/history if nothing else. That's the main reason I like it anyway
>>
>>130069349
>Feels like a thing that should be in private
the entire doc should have been private so what's one more thing with dave? i'd argue it's quite public given how much metallica shit on dave in the 80s in interviews and the like

This is a very comprehensive six-part miniseries each episode about an hour long but is very well made and breaks down each era of the band into reasonable chunks. It's really good if you're curious about the whole Dead phenomena but also if you are a head and haven't seen it it contains some of the last filmed interviews with all the members/crew/orbiters who have pretty much all died by now except for the drummers. It came out in 2016 so I think it was filmed around 2015-15. Anyways its pretty trippy at times and sad at others but even if you hate the Dead it's interesting to watch just for the quality doc filmmaking. It explains how the whole cult around the band came to grow and grow and what it was like back in those boomer fantasy days
>>
>>130043292
As a fan I was pissed it took this long for Sparks to get a doc made about them. I was initially weary going in because of Edgar Wright directing but he actually nailed it it terms of keeping it interesting and matching the bands aesthetic. I'd like to present "5 Days: A Zenumentary". Pretty good coverage of an event that was part of the American rave scene in the mid-late 90s. Helps to serve as a reminder of how much variety there was in electronic dance music in that era...electro-influenced funky breaks were as big in the American scene as house or trance. Also ignore the first 5 minutes of the promoter pretending to be retarded.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdamxnGL6Co
>>
>>130137372
Better Living Through Circuitry approaches the same scene from a different angle, way more random interviews of different artists.

>>
>>130043292
God Said Give 'Em Drum Machines covers some of the same ground as High Tech Soul, except unlike HTS, this one is actually good. Less random opining on the scene, and more hard history and coverage of internal conflict. It's good enough that I wish it was longer and made room to include more Detroit Techno artists.

>In 2006 CBGB, the most famous rock club in the world, closed its doors forever. Everybody associated it with bands such as Blondie, The Ramones and The Talking Heads, but no one remembers that what made it legendary were the hardcore matinées in the 80s.
>Walter Schreifels, of several influential NYC hardcore punk bands, tells us a story not only about some kids and their music but of New York and its changes, too.
