The Arthur Russell compilation "Love Is Overtaking Me" is to receive a re-release featuring new masters of some tracks from a newly-discovered pristine set of reels, plus two new tracks. Out May 21st, which would have been his 75th birthday.

Neat.
I noticed recently they came out with a new comp for The Necessaries. Anyone listen to it yet, and how is it? The rips I've had for years now are kind of meh quality so I'd appreciate the upgrade.

I saw he had a documentary about him, what am I in for bros? Any good? Am I going to cry like a bitch?
>>
>>130056676
why does this specific photo make him look like a chad and no other photo of him does?
>>
what is his seminal album? I love I Couldn't Say it to Your Face, but I heard he has more experimental stuff? I get the sense I should know more but I've yet to hear proper recs

he was a new york phony and the photo makes him look like a country boy

Doesn't include their 7'' single or the Big Sky LP, but the previously unreleased recordings are great

Has one autistic gay bedroom producer ever been this creatively overpowered before or since?

>>130056775
It's short and fairly home-made, guy was like 20something when he directed it, but yes you will cry like a little bitch

>>130057260
He has a few where he looks chadly but ultimately he did have the autistic gay face where the eyes look like a little boy's so it depends on his age in them and angles and stuff
>>
i like his disco stuff, i should check out the cello driven stuff more

World Of Echo and Calling Out Of Context are the two experimental sounds he's most known for & there's nothing else quite like them; Iowa Dream, Love Is Overtaking Me, and Another Thought are more songwriter-focused compilations. Then there's the real schizo stuff like Corn and Tower Of Meaning. For some reason his discography is all over the place in terms of like not being paired with like on his compilations, for example some of his tracks made for his Rough Trade contract appear on Calling Out Of Context but then others are on the Springfield EP and Let's Go Swimming from those sessions was released as a standalone single/EP. Calling Out Of Context is mostly tracks for his Rough Trade contract but then also with a few less finished demos from the Corn sessions thrown in to confuse things, then other Corn session tracks appear on the Springfield EP. Then the Another Thought album contains some tracks intended for his Philip Glass contract, mixed in with other songwriter-ish tracks that would otherwise have fitted on the later compilations, plus some more dance stuff. In short, sequencing-wise his catalogue is a bit of a mess which makes it difficult for newbie fans to know where to start and the historiography of what they're listening to.

Still, it's a nitpick, his estate have been outrageously generous and careful compared to e.g. how tight a grip Sophie Xeon's estate have handled things with. Hell, 'Buddhist Bubblegum' contains detailed descriptions and diagrams of Russell's recording set-up for World Of Echo and his numerological compositional techniques. That's a lot more detail into his process than we usually get with these sorts of figures. That we have a track like Wild Combination that could so easily have disappeared on a rotting tape in some shed is nothing short of a miracle. But I won't link that one because it's imo his best song and I'd be spoiling you by telling you to start with that:

kek I'm looking for like 3 albums that are the absolute ones I need to hear, I'm not an individual songs guy unless an artist literally only has 1 good song which is rare in my taste
>>
>>130057846
1. World Of Echo
2. Calling Out Of Context
3. then it's a toss-up between Another Thought (the earliest posthumous release and therefore the most famous, precedes the others by a whole decade) / Love Is Overtaking Me / Iowa Dream
>>
>>130057911
huh i didn't realize he only had 2 direct album releases and everything else is comps or whatever, thanks I'll check some more out
>>
>>130057987
No, Calling Out Of Context is a compilation too. He only released 1 album (World Of Echo) plus one 12" single (Let's Go Swimming) in his lifetime before he died.
>>
>>130058017
so Tower of Meaning doesn't count? i looked at his page
>>
>>130058017
weird I'm surprised I Couldn't Say it to Your Face wasn't released in his lifetime, I was under the impression it was a lesser known song people liked like 30+ years ago or something
>>
>>130058034
Oh I forgot about that one. It's fragments of a rejected orchestral score for a play so depends to what extent you want to count it. It's a fairly minor work within his discography.
