Is Shostakovich's chamber music just better than his symphonies? I haven't resonated with a single symphony of his, but I love the string quartets I've heard and the piano trio.

Yes - his symphonies were under intense scrutiny so had to be acceptable to the powers that be (see "a Soviet artist's response to just criticism") while his chamber music was able to be more personal
