They idea of listening to only music repulses them. They'll listen and enjoy songs, but they don't see the point if there is no singer.

Another realization is that most people even on here don't actually enjoy music. They only want to be "part of the fanbase". That's why you see retarded posts like "how do i get into this band"? Or they really like the aesthetics or the notoriety some artist have and they think they must enjoy it and there's some sort of a math equation they need to derive to understand why it's good. You need to literally explain it to them.

I mean this is true for a lot of people, but the evidence here is not good. There's plenty of shit that I've been curious about for a long time but didn't quite understand why it was so celebrated. Hearing somebody else's perspective can really shift your own if there's some history that helps build the context, or if there's just an element you weren't focusing on. Have you never talked about art critically with someone? Something as simple as "the drums are really cool" would be enough to make someone focus on the drums where maybe they previously took them in passively.
Asking "how do I get into x" doesn't necessarily mean they just want to be in the club, if that's what they wanted they'd just pretend they like it. It's more of a "what's the big deal with this band? It doesn't hit for me immediately and I want to hear why people like it"

My mom calls ambient music ''litany''

Nothing has ever clicked for me because someone pointed out something to me. If the drums are really cool, I'll notice it. It's fine to be interested in why some band is celebrated in a historical context, but trying to make yourself like something because it's revered means you have a very weak innate taste.

>If the drums are really cool, I'll notice it
even if you do have great listening skills, this doesn't apply to conceptual stuff. A lot of the reasons things hit for me are because of ideas that my tastes drift throughout over time, and that's something internal that would need to be explained if I wanted to tell somebody why this music is interesting to me at the moment. That explanation could be interesting to a friend as well and could be the thing that tips them towards appreciating something. "I didn't think of it that way" vs "I didn't hear that"
The point of music for me is to enjoy it, if I can find a way mentally to have fun with some really shallow boring surface depth pop garbage, then I'm succeeding. The ultimate goal would be to have access to absolutely everything. Surely there is stuff you don't like, and surely there are people that do like it. The reason for that dissonance isn't that you just have perfect taste, it's that they have a perspective you don't and it allows them to like it. If you can find a way in, then you're better off

sometimes you need background music and lyrics are distracting
