>no musical skills; can't play any instruments>no technical skills; can barely turn on a computer or operate a soundboard>takes The Strokes to live in a cabin in Costa Rica>forces them to jam every morning for an hour>produces The New Abnormal; the best Strokes album of the past 25 years>The Strokes win their first-ever Grammy AwardHow does he do it?
He's grade-A tard wrangler, thats it
>>130086325>How does he do it?Early life.
>>130086325>stays out of the way of the people who actually know what they're doing
>>130086325yes he fucking sucks we all know that>how does he do itconnections starting his career and giving credance to his name thus boosting sales down the line
He screwed up the last Sabbath album massively by trying to make them do a replica of their first couple of albums. Geezer Butler said he was crap, Tony Iommi said he was incredibly disappointed with him. There's a bunch of bands who don't like him for similar reasons, like apparently when he was producing Slipknot he just lay down on a couch for the entire time barely saying or doing anything. The only time he moved was when his bodyguard gave him some green and blue terrible smelling mush which Rick Rubin proceeded to eat in a disgusting messy way, getting the mush all over his beard. There are some people who need producers more than others though. Rick Rubin did well with Johnny Cash back in the day for example.
>>130086325The king of snake oil
why don't we like this guy... reuben sandwich bros, over?
>>130086325Whatever he does, it clearly works. I don't think there's a single other producer with a resume as great and diverse as this guy has. It's of course far from flawless, but having your name on so many classic records in so many different genres is very impressive.
>>130087655??? are you a baby?
You think he underwent metzitzah b’peh as a baby?

>>130086325oh look, another Rick Rubin cope and seethe thread.Wildflowers is, hands down, the best Tom Petty album and anyone who says differently is a contrarian twatwaffle.good documentary here on making of Wildflowers, lots of RR to get a little better idea of what exactly he does:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WblnLk387u0
>>130087785don't talk to my bearded guru like that. grrr
ideally the band is good enough that the producer doesn't really have to do anything
i dont know but dude gave us casablancas pure unfiltered voice, which is the sound equivalent of great quality chocolate
>>130086325The New Abnormal was great. The new single by The Strokes is the worst song they've ever made. Rick Rubin is also producing their upcoming album so clearly whatever magic Rubin has is less influential than Julian's dealer.
>>130086325George Martin did it first
>>130090843>The new single by The Strokes is the worst song they've ever madeYou just believe what Fantano tells you.
>>130092120No, it came up as a new release on Youtube music one morning so I got a totally unbiased first listen. One thing that probably emphasized my hate for it was going in with high expectations. I've spent years excited by what direction they'd take next and got blindsided by a Voidz B-side.I check though, and Fantano liked the track just not the auto-tune. I'm fine with auto-tune if the song is interesting, my problem with the song is that it is shit.
>>130089250a good producer will tell you your song is garbage and needs work. A regular producer will tell you it's fine and record it as is.

>>130086325Whatever his faults, you have to give him credit for figuring out that thrash metal sounds better with the reverb turned down.
>>130090843the single is a grower with several layers, brilliant lyrics and overall awesome, waaay better than bad decisions. the way julian delivers this is one of his greatest moments with the strokes:"We're buildin' castles from the bones of dead treesMolded from the shattered ashes of the Dead Sea"
>>130095921>I wanna be a 7-foot zOoOoOmbie
>>130095921This is true, but Fantano hated Going Shopping, so /mu/cels hate it too.
>>130086394Good way of putting itHes good at getting talent together, not just the bands but the mixers and engineers too. At least in the 90s,
>>130087791>>130092203Sucky sucky
>>130096483But Fantano actually liked it? I mean, he did say the autotune was awful, but that the rest of the song was (or might have been) fantastic. The negative reception wasnt because of Fantano but because of:a) high expectations after tnab) it sounds goofy at first listenc) autotune c) so: - haters were quick to say it sucks - fans freaked out because they thought julian had totally lost itand then the supposedly AI ad added to the negativity loop and herd mentality did the restbut in a nutshell, song is really really good
>>130086325jewish privilege right here
>>130095921>it's a growerIt's not good if you have to gaslight yourself into liking it.
>if you let a friend listen to a tune just put the tune out because the tune is finished >Which is an absolutely wild thing to say but does hold some water
>>130087853It’s not even the best petty solo album, full moon fever is.
Has anyone read his book? Is it worth a read?
>>130095921I'll take the bait.>Shit, basic instrumental. Two chord movement basically the whole song.>Stream of consciousness drivel with no meter.>More faux philosophical garbage we've come to expect from this guy>AutotuneAt least bad decisions was reasonably catchy and inoffensive. Julian realized nobody was gonna listen to the voids despite his best efforts so he decided to pawn his bullshit onto the strokes. This is seriously some of the worst shit I've heard from this band. That being said, bad decisions was a mediocre single for a pretty good album so I still have some hope. Also fuck this commiecuck faggot for selling pit tickets for 400 dollars on this new tour. How the fuck are you gonna go on and on about your socialist bullshit then pull some shit like this.

>>130086325>Rick Rubin showed up for 45 minutes a week. Rick Rubin would then, during that 45 minutes, lay on a couch, have a mic brought in next to his face so he wouldn't have to fucking move. I swear to God. And then he would be, like, 'Play it for me.' The engineer would play it. And he had shades on the whole time. Never mind the fact that there is no sun in the room it's all dark. You just look like an asshole at that point. And he would just stroke his huge beard and try and get as much food out of it as he could. And he would go, 'Play it again.' And then he'd be, like, 'Stop! Do that over.' And he had an assistant who was seven feet tall. He had that disease where you can't grow hair on your body, so he was just bald. He looked like Mr. Clean's neurotic cousin. But he basically ran Rick Rubin's life like, he was just fucking on it, on it, on it, on it. About half way through our precious 45 minutes, he would bring in this plate of shit. I assume it was food. It was bluish green. It smelled like someone had just plunged a fucking toilet somewhere. And he would eat it as fast as he could just get it in there, all over himself. Which is, when you're working, so wonderful to look at...

>>130114345>STOP>...do that over...
He went to the crossroads and sold his soul to the devil for starters. He gave him instant taste. When I mean taste, the sensibility of someone who has been listening all kind of music for decades and creating technical ability just out of ear training.
>>130093639he doesn't even know what reverb is
>>130115674he has no taste. have you heard the new Strokes single?
>>130111702yeah, I own it. it's okay, kinda philosophical, easy read. it has ideas things u can try if you're creatively stuck.if you've listened to his interviews discussing producing that's basically what the book is like. borrow or steal a copy...
>>130086325he's good at producing, simple as. You don't need to be a musician, engineer or have technical skill to be a producer. It's a matter of leadership.>>130108580found the contrarian twatwaffle
