I'll start. We All Belong, by Dr. Dog.I have always thought this one is particularly great because it incorporates the best elements of The Beatles in a singular modern way, which it includes their harmonies, chord progressions and structures. But for some reason it's extremly obscure and their only known songs are from some past viral video from Tik Tok such as Where'd All The Time Go.
bump
This era of XTC specifically can be described as Beatlesque
The Knickerbockers were a 60s band that sounded similar enough to early Beatles that their songs sometimes got confused as being by them. Maybe not what you're looking for but I like them.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru1Y3pGSj9c

>>130127953The singer's voice is really like Lennon's.I love this cover by The Applejacks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8JBNIb1zqM&list=RDW8JBNIb1zqM&start_radio=1

>>130127697I still strugle to understand it. I honest can't see anything barely close to The Beatles in XTC.>>130128080Classic.
>>130126866When Klaatu's first album came out, there were rumors the band was The Beatles in disguise. It kind of fucked their career when they were revealed to be just some guys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ4IUjjVfng
Of course these guys
Pretty much all of the Elephant 6 Bands (The Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Beulah)
>>130128715Dusk at Cubist Castle definitely has that "beatles on acid" vibe
Is Tally Hall Beatlesque?
>>130128715Not neutral milk hotel
>>130128328Skylarking is very Beatles influenced
>>130126866Huge rec on this one
>>130129925Wonder if it’ll take another 5 years of this for you to get tired of this
>>130126866Bump
>>130126866Billy Joel intentionally tried to make this sound like a Beatles album as tribute to John Lennon. He gets pretty close and you can sneak some of the songs into a Beatles playlist without anybody noticing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALp9rfnPJ8c>>130128021Lynne is definitely inspired by Beatles but I wouldn't consider him Beatlesque, he has own different style. And I don't mean instruments but the songwriting, he does the typical verse chorus format for pretty much all his songs. Off the top of my head I can think of "Bluebird is Dead" being his most beatles-like song.
>>130127697Can't forget the Dukes of Stratosphear
>>130128715>Olivia Tremor ControlOTC took what The Beatles and The Beach Boys were doing and instead of running where those groups walked, they Usain Bolt sprinted with it. A lot of their songs are straight up transcendentalhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw_UcCwUjMI

>>130128328>>130129903skylarking is probably the most beatlesque post-beatles album and the one with the best songwriting. and the dukes of stratosphear stuff too. XTC were the only ones who could "try for the beatles sound" and do it convincingly. you need to be ascended songwriting masters to even try such a thing>>130128715>>130128803>>130131180E6 are obviously obsessed with 60s music and they made an admirable try. they also suffer from being acid casualties with more starry-eyed enthusiasm than talent. mangum is an amazing songwriter but the least beatlesque of them. OTC probably did the best job of capturing the kaleidoscopic sound of the time, but the songwriting is frustratingly not up to the task. they'll find one interesting chord change or harmonic twist and flail to build a song around it. jumping fences is a breezy, quite enjoyable song, but if you just pay attention you realize the vocal melody is literally not good. and the singing is typical weak beatles imitation stuff. it'd make a wonderful backing track for the beatles with the crunchy arrangement and le quirky sound effectsi'm 100 years old and exhausted. i've chased this stuff, oh the SOUND of it, oh the PURE AND MORE INNOCENT VIBES. you eventually realize that the band who is trying to most SOUND LIKE the beatles is probably not going to best capture what makes them great. at the end of the day, if i want the best thing after the beatles/beach boys, i would go to Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes, i would go to Super Furry Animals' Radiator, i would even go to TMBG. just guys writing the best CONCISE songs they can, in their own style, not so slavishly imitating some totem
>>130126866cool thread
https://youtu.be/9dUbx7DPywE?si=ViNqZGPFieSJvw5OI mean, listen to the track that gives the album its name. It's amazing. There's no other way to describe it. And as far as I remember, I have never seen any thread or mention about Dr. Dog on /mu/.
