Anyone else find Paul Simon to be a MUCH superior songwriter/lyricist than the pretentious Bob Dylan who couldn't even sing properly?"April, come she willWhen streams are ripe and swelled with rainMay, she will stayResting in my arms againJune, she'll change her tuneIn restless walks she'll prowl the nightJuly, she will flyAnd give no warning to her flightAugust, die she mustThe autumn winds blow chilly and coldSeptember, I rememberA love once new has now grown old"I mean geez, Simon and Garfunkel IS poetry.
>>130136352I was literally thinking of doing a post on this.I've been trying to learn to play songs recently and PS's songs are definitely a lot funner to play. They've got cool hooks and shit and the lyrics are actually decipherable and meaningful.I guess the reason BD gets 99% of the press is he was first big solo folk revival singer, he wrote pro-liberal protest songs (I'm sure PS wrote some vaguely political stuff too, but I can't recall any hits that were obviously political), and BD had the more cynical persona while PS emphasized getting along more (and critics prefer the former, while the actual audience tends to like the latter).
>>130136352>who couldn't even sing properly? At least do your research before posting a thread. Paul Simon is pretty good though, Dylan thought so too – well enough to cover The Boxer. Not quite on Dylan's level though and I bet PS wouldn't even think so either.
>>130136352No he's mogged by Bob
>>130138115>>130139464objectively, musicians who first get fans through people hearing their music, not reading a journalist kissing their ass, are superior. it's way more organic.besides baby boomers who might have heard 'like a rolling stone' on the radio, a much, much smaller percentage of BD fans became fans organically (again, hearing the music first hand on the radio) rather than through a intermediary (music journalist) raving about them.PS managed to get his music played on hit radio through the 70s and 80s, while BD was effectively dead on mainstream radio by 1966 (with a slight radio comeback in mid 70s).
>>130142437>objectivelyYou mean >subjectively because it's your (incorrect) opinion. Not even sure what you're on about with all this stuff about radio, it's not as important to everyone.
Hurricane is the only Dylan song I can remember that I like musically. Proves he has some talent at least. The rest is too artsy-fartsy and wishy-washy. Maybe he's great at artsy-fartsy and wishy-washy stuff, but it's not my thing.
>>130143437Hurricane is sentimental crap for white faggots that live in Vermont.
>>130143483Don't care much about lyrics as long as they flow well. More of a melody guy. Good lyrics raise a song at best.
>>130143350this isn't complicated. It is more 'organic' to become a fan of a musician by hearing their music 'first hand' on the radio, etc instead of hearing other people rave about them second hand (through music press etc.) and then checking them out.The percentage of fans of Paul Simon who became his fans via the 1st hand way discussed above vastly outnumbers Bob Dylan, who got a much higher percentage of his fans 2nd hand, via hearing music journalists etc. rave about him.I don't trust 2nd hand fans as much. Their 'fandom' is much more likely to be virtue signalling, i.e., see all these people rave about Bob Dylan in the media, I like him too which means I have high-level 'taste'.
>>130136352>I mean geez, Simon and Garfunkel IS poetryi don't really care for lyrics that too much like poetry I find Bob Dylan the perfect blend
>>130145383>this isn't complicated.I understood your convoluted theory. I merely explained that it's not at all objective. It's SUBjective, as it is your idea. It's easily disproven. I didn't listen to much radio as a child. But as I got older, whenever I heard music I liked, I would ask who it was. I think I first heard Slow Train Coming in my dad's car soon after its release (yes, I'm old). I enjoyed it, so I asked m, found out and heard more Dylan. My mother bought me Bridge Over Troubled Water because she thought it was a masterpiece and raved about it to me. Me not so much. I think it's a bit sappy. I preferred Graceland when it came out (to great critical acclaim). Don't be condescending in future, sonny :^)
>>130136352Anyone else find green to be a MUCH superior color than red? That’s said, yeah I prefer Simon but why does it have to be a completion? There’s a story in Greek mythology in which Hercules gets frustrated and kills his music teacher, and this is said to be the reason that music is not an Olympic sport.
>>130146718Silly kids love to invent console wars. It's embarrassing.
>>130138081Me And Julio is pretty political for the time
>>130146722How can you be embarrassed by what someone else does?
>>130136352>April - will>>May - stay>>June - tune>>July - fly>>August - dust>>September - remember>Wow, thanks Paul Simon for your absolute """"poetry""""
>>130136352based
>>130146791OP BTFO lolAlso>Hop on the bus, Gus>You don't need to discuss much
>>130138115>I bet PS wouldn't even think so either. He did an interview in the mid 70's where he blasted Bob for not being as good as everyone says he is. He was clearly seething though, and it just made him look bad.
>>130147344That's such a shame after Dylan gave him the massive compliment of including a song by him on Self Portrait. I like PS but he does come off as a wanker sometimes.
>>130146680you say 'don't be condescending', yet your initial response was literally pretending you didn't understand my point, but now you admitted you did. kek.but again, my point is I no longer trust people's tastes (even my own to a significant degree). it's probably more often than not determined by an attempt to align one's tastes with the supposed 'wise men' who control the megaphone (i.e., the media) than it being genuine.and I, of course, can't personally say if you're fandom for either/or of the two mentioned is genuine or not (as you can't for mine), but I do think it's fair to say that since PS has had his music played on a medium where it can be experienced and judged directly 1st hand (radio) much more than BD, that it's likely that PS's fans are less likely to just be attempting to appear people of high taste (by aligning 2nd hand with the 'wise men' mentioned above) than a genuine 1st person response to something they heard and liked.
>>130146737I just listened to see if I missed something in prior listens, and I honestly have no clue how that's political (I guess something about the backstory it's based on or something, but 99% of audience doesn't no backstory so it just sounds like random people being mentioned doing random crap (me, Julio, Rosie, Mama Pajama, radical priest)But there's no confusing that BD's early stuff was endorcing lib politics and world view, which the lib media liked, and promoted.
Dylan was a roots rock guy who liked country, blues, and folk so that made him seen as more rock-aligned to critics.
>>130145383>It is more 'organic' to become a fan of a musician by hearing their music 'first hand' on the radio, etc instead of hearing other people rave about them second hand (through music press etc.) and then checking them ouwhy?I mean what;s on the radio isn't random.I'm not even sure what quality or value 'organic' is supposed to have
>>130148333>wut is :^)I only read your first sentence. You're a sad lonely boy in a bubble. Ciao.
