What's the best mathcore and mathcore-adjacent metalcore? Norma jean and botch-style, recommendations appreciated. Old dillinger escape plan isn't quite my style, the songwriting lacks a certain atmosphere.

I actually don't hate this but without that element of ambience and space, it sounds too sterile

early iwrestledabearonce
>>
>>130140598
How early we talm bout? I need it so early that there's no stupid poppy choruses like in that one super popular song they have, or that they at least have some distorted guitar behind the singing
>>
>>130140626
Okay nah i found the first EP and this shit's good, i don't even mind the poppy cleans too much
>>
>>130140498
I'll be so real just go on rym, the ratings on math/metalcore albums over there are actually relatively decent and accurate, you'll find what your looking for in the top 40 for sure. Since you're looking for mathcore you should do the top 40 matchore albums.
>>
>>130141002
That actually sounds like an excellent idea, thanks a lot for the recommendation!
Also unrelatedly, fuck phone manufacturers for phasing out the 3.5mm headphone jack, now i need to get some wireless bullshit to blast this stuff in the bus
>>
>>130140498
my next album is gonna be what i'd call "melodic mathcore". still trying to find the proper balance. here's a demo. it's called Get Your Own Damn Escape Pod

well imo you posted the magnum opus of mathcore. a lot will disagree, but Botch: WATR is my absolute favorite. you'd better know

River Black is Burnt by the Sun with the bassist from Revocation. Recommended if you like riffs.
>>
>>130141199
Needs a second guitar, that being said that's some tight playing, and those lows are insane
>>
>>130141797
there's two separate guitar tracks, they're just playing the same thing. no trickery on that. i recorded it twice lol
>>
>>130141222
I know right, i keep returning to WATR. I'll recommend to you in return Norma Jean's first three albums, they're not quite mathcore but they're fantastic.
I haven't heard rorshach, deadguy or fall of troy, i'll go check them out. Dillinger is decent but i still gotta get more into their stuff. Converge i can hardly stand, they have way too many songs where they repeat the same 2 second riff for 4 minutes, i despise it from the bottom of my heart. Jane Doe has like 2 good songs, the non-mathcore ones, but the latest album seems really good. Maybe they'll grow on me in the future, but yeah, i'll mark the other bands for further listening. Thanks!
Not a massive fan of grind so the first album you linked doesn't quite do it for me, the third or fourth song is a banger tho
The second one is good tho, i like the groove
The third one is too grindy for me too. Honestly it sounds like soilent green but without the interesting bits to me

>discordance axis sounds like soilent green
>takafumi riffs aren't interesting
>>
>>130141893
Then that is indeed some tight playing man lmao. But i was thinking of a completely separate guitar track on top of the current one, the chugs especially sound a little boring to me, they could use some held-out high notes on top for emphasis. Also the panic chords could use something extra, maybe play different panic chords instead of the same one every time, give it a little melody or progression

>>130141249
The opinions of normgroids were neither asked nor desired
>>
>>130141332
Thanks for da recs, i've heard of none of these bands before but i'll check em out!

>>130141455
This album fucks, i need to give it another listen

>>130141492
Some deathcore in here, i actually like this one quite a bit

>>130141672
I get the feeling that some of these bands overuse panic chords. That being said, this song's got some fantastic drumming and vocals

>>130141769
This one's got some nice riffs indeed, but i remain unimpressed by the grind elements. Gotta give this shit another whirl at some point, but not quite my style for now
>>
>>130142132
Hey man i said that i like a very specific kind of mathcore, not grind. Plus i DESPISE blast beats. Call me a poser all you want, i know, i know. But i would rather listen to morbid florist instead of discordance axis. Okay, A Leaden Strike to Nowhere was a pretty damn cool song, but the 50 second songs which are all blast beats and nothing but panic chords? Monotonous
>>
>>130142159
>they could use some held-out high notes on top for emphasis
i could get down with that. writing a totally different guitar part for that kinda chaos is easier said than done. i don't want it to just sound like shitty noise. it's gotta have some kind of groove or melody
>>
>>130142323
It's hard for me to describe what i'm thinking of here but yeah, just something either "on top" of the current guitar part (like those held-out "bomb siren" -like notes), or "on the side" of the current guitar part, playing in parallel but without being a direct doubling or harmony of the main part.
Hell, maybe some runs on the higher strings would do the trick. Another matter is whether you want this second guitar track to be more dissonant or more melodic than the main track. Cuz you can also co-opt the bass to play it's own thing instead of simply following the guitar (i cannot tell whether or not your bass does this cuz i can barely ever hear the bass and guitar separately from eachother, but yeah)
>>
>>130142350
>held-out "bomb siren"
now you're speaking words i understand. i can do that. like a long held out panic chord with a leslie speaker? maybe i could just automate pitch shift the entire track down by -12 or +12 depending on the section. i'm starting to think here...
>>
>>130142350
So what i'm trynna say is that you don't even have to write a totally different guitar part, you can just have the second guitar play some simple 1,2 or 3 note patterns on the higher strings during the chugging and that could work
>>
>>130142365
Yep! And it doesn't even have to be a panic chord (those can get repetitive imo, but ofc it's your music, suit yourself), it can be just a single note (especially useful if you want to anchor the chaos of the rest of the song to a note, but the low-end of your mix is already too busy), plus you can use bends and slides to make it sound all warped and shit. Also you can play any 2 notes on the high strings instead of a panic chord and it can sound good
>>
>>130142419
you play any guitar? you produce? you kinda know how to speak my language. would be cool to collab
>>
>>130142423
I play a little guitar but i have next to no idea about music production, i can give some ideas but i'm not sure if i have the confidence for a full collab (plus i'm barely medicated so i have a tendency to leave projects unfinished, which sucks ass). But if i had more balls then i'd love to

how can you ever be great if you don't step out of your comfort zone?
>>
>>130142517
That's very true. I can give it a shot, but don't be too mad if my ideas don't end up being super great, i have no experience recording anything professional lol
>>
>>130142517
Also is your song in C standard? I was chugging along on my thang and it fits a little too neatly with your song

drop C
>>
>>130142605
Ah, close enough, i've got mine in C standard. But that's real cool tho, did you write all the instruments yourself?
>>
>>130142517
Mmmmm badass
>>
>>130142711
Yeah. I'm a one man band. Everything is me. Except drums. I program those. I'm a terrible drummer irl. Usually starts with me jamming on bass or guitar. I'll tab out the initial idea in guitar pro and build off of it till I've got a cool song. Once I've got a pretty good idea of where the song is gonna go, I'll record it for real. Then I'll make small changes during recording to make it sound better.

late reply but for me two of the most underrated mathcore bands ever came out of opposite sides of PA in the late '90s playing distinctly different styles: Creation is Crucifixion and All Else Failed. the former is grindier tech death inflected metalcore with this paranoid Y2K tech apocalypse aesthetic. the latter is more early Dillinger style, real high intensity jerky stuff but I think they might provide the "atmosphere" OP is looking for. they lacking the sort of whackiness that always rubbed me the wrong way a little with DEP and I think had some of the best lyrics ever

get a usb dongle. sure, most of em suck and introduce hiss but if you get one that amplifies sounds good enough, you can EQ shit so well

Botch and Gaza are the two best in the genre imo

used to see Gaza talked about a lot but I feel like they've fallen off the radar among the newjacks. not one of my favs but pretty unmatched for all out chaos

Early Willowtip had some cool mathcore adjacent bands
>>
>>130156058
Found out about them when I saw them live in '09 with Converge as the main act, their performance really stood out from the other opening bands. I still remember when the band stopped playing and the vocalist stepped down on crowd level and screamed without a mic, dramatic
