I don't like the corny 50s pastiche voice he puts on
>>
Music critics liked him better.
>>
there are butt rock fans that are aware who Elvis Costello is?
>>
>>130151713
remember the swing revival from the 90s and how cringe that was? with the black ties, derby hats and big pants?
now imagine someone in 1985 doing that. Instead of living in the objectively coolest decade he wanted to be a cringe throwback.
>>
>>130151870
To be fair, he had moved well beyond the 50s pastiche by then. In 1985, he was calling himself Napoleon Dynamite and making art rock.

he has one good song

>he was calling himself Napoleon Dynamite
Crazy that's supposedly a coincidence.
>>
>>130152036
Which one is that?
>>
>>130151713
Ryan the guy that started the fire
>>
>>130151713
He doesn't have a bitter or cynical enough sense of humour
>>
>>130153486
Really? He's written loads of songs that could be described as both bitter and darkly humorous. IMO he's one of the masters of that kind of thing. The goofy voice just adds to it.
>>
>>130151713
hardly anybody knew he existed back then and even if someone did hear a song by him they didnt care.
>>
>>130155537
>debut album peaks at no.14 on the UK charts
>apparently nobody cared
>>
>>130155648
i live in the usa. he was a nobody over here. during mtvs heyday they never played any of videos, and his songs were never on the radio

Armed Forces went to #10 on the charts, Oliver's Army was played on MTV
>>
>>130151713
Because his music is lame.
>>
>>130156909
You’re lame
>>
>>130156715
>He was the ninth loser one time!
>>
>>130151713
Wtf do you mean retard. Butt rock don't even know who that nerd is
>>
>>130151870
Costello is from the 70s retard
>>
>>130157765
EC haters typically know nothing about him
>>
>>130151766
but do you enjoy his hit song about a dementia patient? I don’t get the 50s thing. His genre is more “Sitcom Theme Song” core
>>
The critics live hime because they look like him

he's a bullying magnet
>>
>>130156715
>actually his one album back in 79 charted for one week. and then there was one of his videos that got airplay once....
were you actually alive back then? i was and i never knew this guy existed because he had zero presence in the states
>>
>>130151713
Buttrock is for trannies who want to feel like rugged working class so a based racist like Costello obviously makes them seethe.
>>
great albums plus hes racist i love him
>>
>>130151713
He doesn't. I like both.
>>
>>130160598
That's literally impossible if you cared about music at all. His SNL performance was considered the most iconic music performance on that show for a long time, Alison, Man Out of Time, Oliver's Army and later songs like Veronica all received extensive airplay, he had well publicized collaborations with Squeeze and Paul McCartney and generally his records received rave reviews from music critics.
>>
>>130161415
he never made it above cult status and or critic's darling in USA really. (maybe for like a half month they played that Veronica song on MTV heavy rotation.)
>>
>>130160698
>Buttrock is for trannies
500 IQ
>>
>>130151713
He's the randy newman of guitar music
>>
I don't care for his music but I do like that he dropped N-bombs in front of Bonnie Bramlett.
>>

>That's literally impossible if you cared about music at all
how do you think people listened to or discovered music years ago? we just turned on the radio or tv. as a kid or teen you didnt go out to the library to research pop music. what was played at the time was more than enough. metal was popular nobody gave a shit about this nerd who by the mid80s wasnt even making accessible pop music anymore. why would kids want to listen to him sing country music, almost blue, or tin pan alley shit, imperial bedroom. those albums didnt even chart in america
>>
>>130151713
Still seething about that David Lee Roth quote huh?
>>
>>130151713
I find his overt self-awareness offputting
