Smells Like Teen Spirit. I mean, I'm a GenXer and it's probably the only song I can vividly recall hearing for the first time. It was the last week of soccer practice in high school. We were in the locker room and someone put a tape (yes, tape) in the boombox that was there. We'd regularly play music before or after practice so it was normal. Anyway, the guitar riff starts, the drums kick in... and the whole room goes nuts. People would start jumping, bouncing off the walls. It was just mindblowing. It was magical. *cracks* Kids today would never understand. *sips* Without that song they're just an underground band from Seattle some people might still recognize.

>>130156222It's perfectly comprehensible, imaginable, and understandable when placed in its proper historical context. In fact, any other answer within that frame would nigh inarguably be contrarian. However, 3 decades removed from that historical context, it's no longer as uniquely and necessarily revolutionary against the larger musical landscape. Now, its significance has been reduced from generational anthem to gateway / entry level song to the band itself. In that context, you are viewed as an inexperienced plebeian who is apparently grabbing one of the few tracks from them you've actually heard. Surely, against their entire catalogue, you cannot possibly have not found another song which resonates with you personally more—is the thinking. Also, this is a different time, a different place, and a different social milieu, where the values are generally different. You have to look at the shared answers here about offbeaten tracks and ask yourself what pattern that reveals about the mentality of the average member here. It's one which doesn't need the angsty warcry against a monotonous against. Unrelatedly, the reason for that is because a monotonous existence is most people here's full-lived experience and expectation at this point.

I wish he would have been able to do the Foo Fighters shit he wrote that Grohl stole. All My Life and The Pretender really would have been better Nirvana songs.
