Who's your favorite drummer and why? Mine is Zach Hill because of his ability to go apeshit and still make something that makes sense rhythmically.
>>
James Bradley Jr, jazz child prodigy with a fascinating career.

His prog drumming stands above all others, discipline era was peak

Ahh shit is that Pearl Jams second but not most famous drummer? My dad would buy you a beer. I like PJ too grew up with them so hard i have to religiously tell kids on here theyre more mature than Nirvana (AiC is still my fave grunge)

i find zach a bit uncoherent, like im not sure what parts he has in his mind that make something fit together

Bill Ward cause he plays fun fills, nicely uses tom toms and makes some unusual rhythmic choices (jazz influence). Also his kit just sounds great

bill ward is a funk drummer, not a jazz drummer

Buddy Saltzman
Who? He was one of the most recorded session drummers from 1955-1968. He had a feel I love... back before the days of click tracks and quantizing.
>Here are a few of the number-ones: "The Loco-Motion" by Little Eva, "I'm A Believer" by the Monkees, "Rag Doll" by the Four Seasons, "The Sounds Of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel, "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies, and "Lightnin' Strikes" by Lou Christie. Saltzman's voluminous discography also boasts records by the Cowsills, Neil Sedaka, Solomon Burke, Tommy James, Lesley Gore, Barbra Streisand, and Peter, Paul & Mary

I literally only listen to /mu/ meme music so Zach Hill

(I am not being facetious or ironic, he literally is my favorite, for the same reasons as OP, and I do literally only listen to things shilled here and on Tiny Mix Tapes when that still existed and sometimes Resident Advisor)
>>
>>130163148
yeahhhh in no particular order but starting with some mentioned in the thread already, zach hill, carson palmer, jaki liebezeit, klaus dinger, terry bozzio, jon bafus, robert wyatt, jon christensen, charles hayward, chris cutler (henry cow) and many more... especially if we were to include percussion in general and not just kit drumming.

jaki liebezeit from CAN, love his grooves and has incredible feel/time
mitch mitchell is up there too, i like his jazz influence, but still has cool rock licks
jeremiah greene (RIP) has awesome feel even if he "technically" drags or rushes some.

Gadd is one of the greatest to do it, love him on Aja

>>130164458
Sounds like s you problem, Pachuco Cadaver or Moonlight in Vermont are very catchy and very great displays of drumming from TMR, and then you have albums like Mirror Man Sessions that show off his playing in a less experimental way for people who have a hard time with trout masks brilliance

And the over praise of the police continues

Chris Hornbrook

ahhhhhh
>>
>>130170307
I generally go more for Mirror Man, I like hearing him play across a long jam, but hard to say. On one hand, it's highly documented that TMR had all the drums and cymbals covered in cardboard so they wouldn't piss off their neighbour, but on the other hand the mirror man session is in fact the session where John was told afterwards that his tea had been spiked with LSD

I have a really bad habit of not appreciating drummers or bassists

I'll go with John Bonham just because I notice him the most
>>
>>130174752
you should go with him because his dynamics are both faultless and the envy of all
>>
>>130174752
>not appreciating drummers or bassists
you mean being based?
>>
Is Jon Fishman actually a good drummer or is he just in Phish?
>>
>>130174774
He had one fault. As Ginger Baker said, technically superb but he couldn't swing a sack of shit.
>>
>>130175179
i used to think this too, knowing only the first zep album or two, something about the slowness of the songs makes it a bit harder to hear. knowing more of his playing now, thats just not true.

Dave grohl because he rips and thinks aids is made up

I don't know about all times-favorite, but I'm a big fan of Panda Bear's drumming in Animal Collective, back when he didn't use a full kit (Feels, Strawberry Jam, Merriweather Post Pavilion to some extend, etc)

The parts he used to come with were actually really refreshing, rarely relying on back beats, usually not even using a kick drum. Nothing too complex but very original

No one mentioning Britt Walford. Shame on you

Simone Pace from Blonde Redhead
Jonathan Fuller from Sleepytime Trio (also guitarist in Engine Down)
Klek from Angine de Poitrine

Many such cases with drummers, many such cases.

>>130175085
he's a good drummer.

holy keks of course it is

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEPog_WdPE4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVADdyDFLXY&t=1833s

he doesnt lean on swing as an ostinato, but he swings. zep leans on quater and 8th feels especially when theyre doing theyre fucked up time signature riffs.

its not like his riffs are legendary for no reason right?

These are my three drumming gods

Art Blakey
Christian Vander
Tatsuya Yoshida
>>
>>130174102
its fun to say nigga
>>
>>130163148
Reason I love Zach Hill so much is because he doesn't really play like a drummer, he plays the drums melodically almost, he's not just providing a beat the drums literally shape the music itself.

Makes total sense he'd experiment with v-drums and vocal samples because he's playing along to Ride's vocals, you hear it in the video your thumbnail is from
>>
>>130186649

but it aint always right

I usually know very few of them and only because of their bands, if they are among the oens I listen to.

My favourite used to be Rob Bourdon from Linkin Park. He had the it thing about, the energy, the charisma if you will.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy_iNVC10Rs

Since he left the band I guess now it's Colin Brittain again from LP. He has his own shtick and mannerisms and is very memeable. Drumming is not his main thing, but Mike Shinoda needed a drummer and asked him. The rest is history.
