People seem to have forgotten about him. Why? All of his albums up to Sea Change are incredible. Even after Sea Change, Modern Guilt and The Information are great. He's probably the best artist of the mid-to-late 90s in my opinion, but I never see anyone talk about him, at least these days.
I had zankou chicken last night and it wasn't good :(
>>130165204when i liked beck i wanted less from musicnow i just hear scientology
it's noobodys fault.... nobodys faaault.... but mmyyy owwwwwwwwwn
>>130165204honestly he is overratedhis music is pretty much exclusively to awkward teens in the mid 90s to early 2000s, zoomers couldn't give a single fuck about this guy, not even zoomer music nerds
>>130165204he has 7 million monthly Spotify which is pretty respectable for someone who was just glancingly mainstream every now and then.
his pivot to complete pop slop in his 50s really tarnished him a bit for me I must say
>>130165688>zoomers couldn't give a single fuck about this guy, not even zoomer music nerdsI'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I can't think of another 90s Alt Gen X-artist who has completely failed to appeal to any other generations more than Beck. You'll still see some of those 90s bands like Ween and Cake bring in new younger fans and maintain a relevancy which is surprising considering just how huge and even "hip" Beck was in the mid 90s. While most zoomers and younger only recognize him for Loser (at best) it's hard to overstate for those who were old enough to be aware at the time just how huge and trendy Beck was when Odelay came out. It was being called the "album of the decade" and Beck the "future of music" without a hint of irony. After Kurt offed himself there was a brief window where Beck was anointed with the "voice of a generation" title. Yet now it's like he never even existed. His influence on music and the culture at large disappeared completely sometime around 2010. His legacy got washed away and he didn't even have to do anything controversial or become a pariah for it to happen. His music speaks to a certain segment of gen xers/older millennials at a specific point in time and literally no one else
>>130166555nailed itbeck's sound is probably the most mid to late 90s sounding music out there and that period is the epitome of uncool with zoomers
>>130166555you provided no proof for anything you claimed, retard. zoomers are the worst.
>>130165204He was innovative at the time but his music in that style had been surpassed by various indie acts from the late 00s onwards + his clean-cut persona and Scientology connections aren't very sexy from an image standpoint to be memorable, love it or hate it someone like Geprdie Greep is gonna be remembered by the indie crowd for being a weird little guy if nothing else
>>130166805>Geprdie GreepNo one knows who that is. Everyone has heard Loser at least once
>>130166555Nice digits.Becks last big time hit was that WOW song, that was in 2017 surprisingly, I was thinking 2010 like you said. That shit was on commercials and id hear it everywhere. So barely less than a decade since he seemingly disappeared? I cant remember anything from him after that. But yeah the whole scientology thing became a big talking point whenever he was brought up and it seems to have completely sideswiped his relevancy. With his persona it just makes him weird in a bad way. I think Gen z/x aren't digging him atm because he is a 90s thing that didnt go away and was fairly popular into the 2010s. If he stopped making albums in the very early 2000s before turning out alot of cookie cutter pop stuff he would have more "kvlt" status and feel like a cool 90s thing they could adopt. He accidentally overstayed his welcome or something
>>130165204Talk singing gets old quickly. He's a talentless hack.
>>130166555he literally won an AOTY grammy a decade ago
>>130168027>thinking the grammy's have mattered at all in the last twenty years LMAO
>>130166602Beck's music has aged very well, Odelay and Mutations play like they came out yesterday, at least to me. If they really had aged, zoomers would love them, because zoomers actually love the mid-to-late 90s. Just look at how many of them worship dated late 90s bands like Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Korn etc.
>>130166805Pretty sure he came out and confirmed he wasn't a Scientologist.
>>130167221>talk singinghttps://youtu.be/rpv-CcRX4X4?si=M8IejGqRaSAxiug9kek
>>130168027Which was absolutely wild being in 2014, as it was past his golden era. I grew up a huge Beck boy, and even I don't think Morning Phase is album of the year.Ive heard his Grammy win was a nod from the mainstream establishment at Beck's importance in the music scene. Because he never really was marketable as a celeberity, as something mainstream. Yet he still made waves in the industry.
>>130168491This. He was a scientologist only in name. I think he said he had a family member as a scientologist, so he just sort of inherited the movement.I dont even think he's a scientologist anymore.
>>130170969His Dad and ex-wife were Scientologists, apparently. Based on recent interviews, it seems he wants absolutely nothing to do with it, understandably.
My impression of beck is that the first few albums were experimental pop genius that had roots in americana and then after that he just settled into becoming a folk artist
>>130165204Listened to BeckSaid what the heckWent out and stained my wooden deckThe stereosThey didn't knowThe scarf around me neckI wrote a check, was out of timeLife gave me lemos, I'm a limeHad a big nooseIn my cabooseCombined words make a rhymeShe's diffferentiating her clothesBut I can smell it with my noseAnd on and on and etc. Just take some elevator music and add nonsense words and you've made a Beck song.
>>130165204God, most Gen X music is fucking awful. Especially this bozo.
>>130168444Zoomers love nu metal and emo because it goes along with their attempt to cosplay as millennial teenagers (despite hating millennials). You can't cosplay as a guy who listens to Beck because Guy Who Listens to Beck wasn't really a genre of person.
>>130166555Trips of truth. To me he always seemed stuck in the 00s hipster era. Sea Change was the last time I remember an album of his being relevant. That sort of indie (fortunely) fell out of flavour.
Beck is earnestly ironic. Zoomers can't into it on multiple levels. Imagine a zoomer trying to enjoy Midnite Vultures, she can't, it's beyond her.
>>130172483Yeah cause trannyslop and fucking kendrick lamar is soooo much better
>>130166555he is very gen x in style and appearancethe apathetic slacker aesthetic fell off
>>130172513I was a millennial teenager and I listened to Beck
I think Modern Guilt is beautiful. Volcano makes me cry.
>>130173018I’ll take that aesthetic over the try hard hustle culture looksmaxx bullshit any day
>>130172513This is it right here. That's why people pretend My Chemical Romance is so far above indie rock acts around the 00s. Its all about fashion.
>>130172513Yeah, this is my point. If his music was actually dated and "the epitome of mid-to-late 90s," they would be listening to him and copying his fashion.
>>130166805You could claim other indie acts topped Mutations or Sea Change (which even still are great albums), but no one else in music has dared to make something even remotely like Mellow Gold, Odelay, or Midnite Vultures. Especially Midnite Vultures.
>>130173787To be fair most indie rock from the 00s was garbage, it's not a stretch to say MCR was better than that.
>>130174127Nah gay emo garbage for teenage girls at hot topic was always garbage just like the indie of that era
I’m 37 and find Beck grating on the ears. I remember thinking his voice was silly when I was 9 or 10, but he really just kinda sucks.
>>130174154that's probably true, but at least MCR could put on a proper rock show
>>130165204>90s Cameron Winter
>>130174127Absolutely not. Teenagers is a catchy song but MCR was basically just Emo Queen.
>>130170940me when morning phase won:https://youtu.be/dJYO8RAsR_4
iiiiii wanna defyyyy the logic of all sex laws
Zoomers are missing out if they disregard him entirely because of goofy songs like Loser.I agree that the postmodern ironic slacker aesthetic aged like milk, but Beck was also a very good songwriter who made several albums of straight forward and earnest folk, country and pop tunes.
>>130178893>I agree that the postmodern ironic slacker aesthetic aged like milkEhh not really, look around you the whole hyper-competitive materialistic global scam culture is fucking ruining everything. I'd take the 90s slacker over the neurotic super judgmental broccoli-haired zoomer with a permanent stick up their ass
>>130165204>was being called the "album of the decade" and Beck the "future of music" without a hint of irony. After Kurt offed himself there was a brief window where Beck was anointed with the "voice of a generation" titleSo much hype for pastiche. Style over substance.
>>130178893I disagree. Pavement, i.e., the progenitors of the indie slacker aesthetic, are huge with zoomers. Maybe it was just the one song, but they have 2.4m monthly listeners on Spotify, and the one song still has 250m+ streams which has to count for something. At least some of Beck's music should appeal to them on some level.
>>130165204Very simpleHe was a scientologist in the 90s-mid 2010s when he was shilled by the industry as an all time greatHe disavowed scientology in 2019, when is magically when talk and praise about him fell off
>>130174165Fans of Beck include Sonic Youth and Johnny Cash. Fans of Cameron Winter include hacks such as Courtney Love and Billy Corgan. Your analogy sucks.

>>130181880Sonic Youth are hacks....
>>130178931Newsflash tardo:The 90s slackers have grown up, and are now in charge of most institutions you see around you. And you say things have never before been worse. Put two and two together.
>>130183399I agree Gen Xers don't get enough hate
>>130165204I feel like he never found a good look he was comfortable with. His first albums was like 70s nostalgia. Then he tried Mexican white boy or colonizer core. Beck never had a Beckian Look that people remember him for. Like Jack White is old too but he got this specific gothic country core going on.OK this is his 2026 look and he looks good for his age. His catseye sunglasses are nearly iconic to him I'd say. The other stuff is just like clean dadcore. He would be the hippest 55 year old at the party but still doesn't make him 'rockstar'. At least choose a interesting folk outfit like add some feathers, a mohawk, or go in a sci-fi direction. I dunno go to some gay man and just workshop something. Also his last name is Hansen I wonder if there are some Norwegian aspects he can use or go to.
>>130183636>Then he tried Mexican white boy or colonizer coreYou're a annoying faggot and you need to stay on the fantano subreddit
>>130183636>Also his last name is Hansen I wonder if there are some Norwegian aspects he can use or go to.If he dressed like a viking or some shit you are the type to call him a nazi
>>130172483Youre a dumb fuck with shit taste zoomer
>>130183636You're basically what this anon described >>130172513Haven't even mentioned his music, only his clothes and race
>>130185066zoomers don't have the ability to appreciate art or music on any level beyond the identity of the artist. It's literally the only thing that matters to them which is why their music and art is such utter dogshit. Hopefully gen a rejects this type of anti-human conditioning and starts to appreciate music on it's own merits again
>>130183409it's going to start happening increasingly frequently within the next few years as people begin to realize that literal boomers are actually retirement aged, and that these businesses actually functioned better back when they weren'tthey'll have the epiphany
>>130172601I used to love that album but nowadays I think it sounds kinda cheesy. I know he was trying to do the prince pastiche not being taken serious shit but I don't know, Get Real Paid, Beautiful Way and Nicotine and Gravy are the only tracks I come back to. When I listen to Beck nowadays I mostly listen to The Information, One Foot in the Grave, especially the expanded edition, and Modern Guilt
>>130166095I was gonna say this. Can't underestimate how bad your legacy can be tainted if you do this, at least until you die then everyone gets to re-evaluate and appreciate the better stuff. That or just disappear for a while so people have time to dig you up instead of being force fed your late era garbage.
>>130165204He looks like a retarded Scott Walker
