I don't understand the narrative around George as this misunderstood genius. He wrote some good songs, but never reached the heights of John or Paul as a songwriter...But he was one of the best lead guitar players of all time. There are Beatles tunes that wouldn't have left the cutting-room-floor without George's guitar work.So much of what we think of when we think "The Beatles" is just George's melodic leads.

Out of those, one was plagiarized, one was a brazen (and successful) attempt to cash-in on Johns murder that would not have been a hit otherwise, one sold on being the follow-up single to ATMP, and one was a legitimate huge hit song: Something.(If we're gonna be very gracious to George I guess arguably While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Here Comes The Sun have strong enough hooks to have performed well commercially. They were both passed over in favor of songs that were big hits - whether they would have we can only guess.)The ATMP (album) songs were in general not rejected. It was rather the case that George were not an assertive musician with a clear vision of what his songs needed. Yet he resented being directed by John, Paul and George Martin. Thus the Beatles ended up doing 100+ takes on e.g. All Things Must Pass (the song) because everyone loved the song, but in the end George never figured out how he wanted it and it never ended up on a Beatles record. In the end he took his assorted bag of unfinisheds to Spector who -did- have a clear vision of how to arrange songs.
