You're telling me people learn an instrument just to play other people's songs? Or join bands just to mindlessly "jam" for hours on end? Or decide to make a living from teaching people to play other people's songs? And they go their ENTIRE lives not knowing the joy of writing songs, of finally setting down the ideas that have been rattling around in your head and figuring out how to make it all work together like a Swiss watch, all while new ideas randomly spring out of nowhere like magic to fill in the gaps or become foundations for new songs?

That's right, because they love music more than they love themselves

Don't get me wrong, I've probably picked apart thousands of songs by other people for fun and to form a deeper connection with the music. But there is nothing cooler than having a "thing" of music (maybe a song, maybe an album, maybe 10 albums) that has your brainstink all over it. There's nothing wrong with indulging in that feeling, even if it might be shit and nobody will listen to it.

Indulging being a key word. I think creative endeavors are kind of embarrassing by default and it is a hurdle that many people just aren't willing to get over. Not saying it as a knock, just admitting that it takes a certain kind of courage and dedication. Not everyone has the mental framework to get out there and make their own art and, most of all, publish it. It's also easier to work with a ready made template than jump into uncharted territory for the possible pleasure of basically no one and the displeasure of many.
With all that said, I don't look down on them in the way you seem to. Playing music allows you to *be* that specific piece of music itself, and how can you blame people for wanting to be something that they already deem to be beautiful and well put together and resonates with their soul in a stronger degree than their wells of self doubt and other neuroses.

Thank you, surprisingly thoughtful and well worded response for slash moo. I guess there is a particular comfort to be found in inhabiting a song when you're not activelt fighting it, although personally I feel more fulfillment in performing my own music but I can see how the turmoil of getting to the point where you can do it confidently might outweigh the reward. Although I wasn't really thinking about the performance aspect when I made this thread anyway. Also, I feel like I have a kind of assbackwards neuroticism and self-doubt when it comes to others' art. I often feel more embarrassed to perform a piece of music I know intimately than one I wrote a week ago, sometimes you like your wife more than your child, or whatever. I even used to begrudgingly edit songs I liked in Audacity to omit certain sections or change the tempo or mix them differently before playing them to people.

>mfw used "although" in two sentences back to back
I need to be gutted like a fish

Songwriting us a totally different skill than just playing, you have to consciously choose to write instead of just play

Don't be so hard on yourself, anon. That's normal for a stream of consciousness post. This isn't a college essay.

"youre telling me..."
no.
however, the world doesnt care and the social structure is mean, and you gotta depend on you to be free. so get that fucking money, son. and keep making music.

they arent embarassing. theyre fucking hard.

>>130192176
I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of music and art in general.

Ive never been a guitarist to learn other songs. The juvenile process of slowly learning to turn chords into songs is one of the most enchanting experiences in life non musicians (drummers dont count, I was one before guitar) really cant comprehend the feeling
