theres this old reverb vst that is called abstract chamber that i used all the time, idk why but it sounds neat, if you want to enshittify your reverb just downsample on a send

also i don’t think the (plugin) scream filter reacts much like the original massive filter.
it was kind of obvious just watching the demo video, and i tried sweeping it around and very roughly approximating if it may be the key tracking… eh.
maybe there’s a sweet spot to gain stage it at but there’s a very obvious round ish 3rd harmonic square type sound to it, and if you back off the gain it starts squealing prematurely (haha)…

HOWEVER it does sound very good and extremely useful for a similar in the ballpark sound straight away, and will probably sound insane in a full chain dialed in to its own strengths. very good just not THE SAME.
well that’s my first impression anyway.

obviously most don’t care or want it but if you want that one specific early 10s wub that + the tube distortion in massive is just necessary.

other use cases (for me) were adding grit or an annoying ring to a patch, or in an acid patch (not as the main filter but again for a specific character).
straight up i think the massive x filters just out class it for acid sounds though.

on my to do list was to have a sesh where i through scream into some fm8 chains to see if the (that) one growl can be taken further and im expecting it to be insane in that context.

idk it’s just funny, weird, and inconvenient that just this one filter on a 20 year old digital synth isn’t available.
if NI wasn’t hell bent on making the most ridiculous decisions possible they’d be offering several of their old effects as standalone marketed toward the edm crowd or capitalizing on the 90s/y2k nostalgia shit. SIIIIGH

they never will because of boomers just doing the decisions and besides its more profitable to cater to people with more "easy" approachable ways to make music.

if anything NI Massive is still very good, just that it was a different period for NI, if they ever wanna refurbish massive they could give it the Absynth treatment but its not gonna be anything new and besides the scream filter just being entirely proprietary and never being its standalone thing, so the scream vst is probably the closest thing for you if you dont want to use NI massive as your only source.

also cure audio does a lot of that old dubsteppy 2010 stuff, so i recommend checking their videos ig if you like that sort of thing

if you want more advanced filtering stuff, you could learn how to use filtertable by kilohearts, there is a way to imprint filters but im not a 100% sure of it, probably their discord or some tutorial has it out there

Anyone have experience using Flex at all? I don't know if it's just me, but the bass presets are a nightmare to use. They add loads of additional harmonic content that sounds shitty and tends to be very present, rather than a nice subtle effect. I also have trouble trying to tame the dynamics - like I'll have a pattern that goes up an octave during the 2nd part and it gets kind of rumbly and muddy there and too loud. I've tried compression, limiting, various EQ'ing, using the dials in Flex itself, and nothing seems to work. Very likely a skill issue, but would be interested to know if anyone else gets it.

yes, expensive gear/plugins wont help you make better music. familiarize yourself with what you have and "master" it. you will be better off knowing the ins and outs of one plugin than having 20 expensive ones that you dont know how to use. at that point you are essentially just paying for presets.

I'm honestly really torn on this. Feels like I'm slowly approaching a point where the quality of my compositions/productions could be "marketable" in some sense, hell I've even had some friends&family tell me that the melodies got stuck in their heads over a week after the initial listen.
But I've never released anything publicly, and I'm not sure I'd even want to. Not only do I hate attention, but I'd mostly worry that making music would turn from a fun hobby I do at my own pace into a chore with pressure to release, which would probably completely kill my drive and any joy I currently derive from it.
I guess in the end I'll probably just keep it all to myself, but sometimes I can't help but wonder "what if".

At 0:10, what is this? How do you get from the intro to that? It literally sounds like a random pattern was queued after the intro. For example Autechre do this very well, they transform tracks in unexpected ways but you can see that it makes sense you just weren't expecting it to happen that way. In OPN's case, I'm not expecting it because it fucking sucks ass and doesn't make any sense, not because I couldn't think of it.

My top tip would be don't make the same mistake I did and watch too many YT tutorials before actually using your DAW. The first few months will probably be spent figuring out the DAW, your preferred workflow and what works for sound selection and composition. For me, this part was very frustrating and daunting and made it hard to want to open the DAW on some days (sometimes for weeks on end), and I tried to justify it by watching YT tutorials so that I was still 'learning something', but all I needed to do was spend more time in the DAW experimenting and trying my best to make what I could. It's really obvious in hindsight, but it's easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you have to learn and fall into these kinds of procrastination traps. Pic unrelated.
